Just heard the sad news that Tom had sadly died. Regret I was in Australia on holidays when Tom departed this world. He was a great professional support to all colleagues who worked in the Community & Comprehensive Schools sector, a good friend and mentor. Mr, Kilraine, where do I start? From the time I entered the Senior Comprehensive in 1979 to 1982 I had experienced something very special.. This was no ordinary school, this was the Senior Comp. Under his stewardship, Mr. Kiilraine had very carefully chosen a team of teachers that believed in the same ethos. May all students be the best that they can be.
They went far and beyond their call of duty.
Mr. Kilraine not only encouraged work in the class room but had a huge interest in extra curricular activities. This was where I found my niche, whether it was on stage as Hildagard Fitzelt In Frankenstein and Golde in Fidddler on the Roof, I thought I was heading for an Oscar . Then came the Sport. I had never seen a gym as big in all my life and plenty of grounds to play matches outdoors.
I was called in to Mr, kilraine's office on occasion where he would,d try to explain the importance of the classroom but he was also the man who would push me as best he could to win at all costs in the sports grounds.
You were very much a Father Figure to me Mr. Kilraine and I enjoyed all our meetings in and out of your office,

It was with shock and great sadness that I learned of Tom's passing in the past few days. He will leave a void in the hearts of those who knew him and worked with him. He gave me my first teaching job in Ballymun Comprehensive and was a great support and friend as well as being an excellent Principal and Educator. I will always remember him with great fondness. Tom had to fight very hard with Dept of Ed. for the separate Senior School to be built in 1977, almost unique in being a post Junior Cert. School , with a dedicated young staff, specialising in Senior curriculum.
He championed every level of ability for good teaching, but the supportive ethos for pupils and staff was central.

To see this mirrored in pupils’ and colleagues’ tributes is great validation for him as an educator, and I know his family appreciate it.
Rest in Peace Tom. Well deserved. .

Sincere condolences to the Kilraine family. He brought a refreshingly enlightened attitude to education. With the team he kept around him, he improved the life chances of many and he was a man of many chances. He gave me more than my fair share and it was only retrospectively that I recognised how important they were. Lovely to see so many messages from past pupils and colleagues. So many fond memories. With his hands in his trouser pockets his gait was a kind of gentle rolling bounce and he was fond of an exasperated sigh followed by.a hand to his forehead. RIP Tom, many of us owe you and your team a huge debt of gratitude.

During his terminal illness we clung, optimistically, to the hope that his durability and tenacity would see him through, once more! Sadly, it was not to be! He is gone to his reward and we mourn his passing. May he rest in peace. His vision for a more holistic educational intervention to address social disadvantage endures and the torch of enlightenment has been passed on. Long may it light the educational path for others. Was so sorry to hear the sad news of Mr Kilraines passing. A great principal at Ballymun comprehensive and an absolute gentleman too. Although I hadn't seen him since I left the school back in 1975 it was an honour to attend his funeral Mass and a privilege to have known him.
