Tom was a Gentleman in the truest sense of the word.

I can’t thank Margaret and Tom enough for the hospitality they showed me growing up. I have fond childhood memories of walking into the house where Tom would be sitting in the corner with his paper. His warm welcome and smile would light up the room.

I hope the Smyth Family can take solace in the beautiful messages that are being left here by family, friends, former colleagues and pupils. He undoubtedly had an impact on so many lives during his time on this Earth.

Slán Abhaile Tom. You will deeply be missed.

Darren, Caroline and the Laird's.
Deepest sympathy to the Smyth family on the sad loss of Thomas RIP
Great memories of St Margaret’s and Swords.
Ní fheicimid a leithéid arís. Never more true than in the case of our wonderful colleague Tom Smyth. Always cheerful, constantly supportive and forever encouraging, Tom was the kindest and warmest of Headmasters. He always played for the team, and was the inspirational Captain who steered the good ship De la Salle through many a storm, with calmness, dignity and no little skill. And left it greatly enhanced by his empathetic stewardship. The warm and co-operative spirit existing between staff and students today, so often commented upon by outsiders, is just one of the many wonderful strands he bequeathed as part of his legacy. No task was ever too small for Tom to undertake, no difficulty too great to shake his indefatigable optimism and energy. From his pin-stripe suits and immaculate white shirts, to his friendly smile, enthusiasm and wit, of Tom it can most definitely be said, as another man of science (Buffon) phrased it : le style c'est l'homme même. To Margaret, Andrew, Orlagh and Michael, and all Tom's wider family, my most sincere condolences. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Sincere condolences to the Smyth family on the passing of Thomas. RIP
Our deepest sympathies to hero Margaret , Andy Orlagh,Michael and families and the Smyth families on Tom's passing on to join his lovely Mum on her anniversary. We are all much poorer for his loss. He also had an acute lens on life and living with wisdom and fine judgement. He was a most considerate, honest, generous and quietly charitable man. He was deservedly adored by their marvellous grandchildren. He was a most talented man more than we have space for here. His rendering of the Rocky Road to Dublin still reverberates, among many others. While a good sensitive leader he was also a selfless team player. Will miss his consistent friendship but his marvel lives on in Margaret and the family.
