Condolences to all your family and friends

My heart goes out to everyone fortunate enough to have known Tommy. We were probably his newest friends, meeting him just days before his passing sadly. Those days forever changed my life as Tommy passed on all he could of his passion for the sea, his love of knowledge and nature, and his philosophy on life. While I wish I had written down everything he said in my journal, I did manage to capture the moment Tommy helped my son catch his first fish.

Ari caught his first fish!!! And then eleven others!!! My God! This ten-year-old boy, this man that he is becoming…just WOW! I will never forget how he turned towards me briefly in all of the excitement, with his eyes and mouth drawn wider than ever before, so exhilarated, so happy, and so eager to share this moment with me. It was magical, a memory to last a lifetime, and we owe it all to Tommy O’Brien! He even let him drive the boat back to his house! What a kind, generous, and endlessly fascinating new friend we have!

Our deepest condolences to Tommy’s family on his sudden passing. He was a great neighbour in his boat passing up and down on the Owenacurra river and having the chats. We will miss hearing his boat approaching and watching out for him to pass back to be out for the chats. He was a true gent. He was a fountain of knowledge esp local history and very happy to share it. He will be missed greatly by us who had the absolute pleasure of meeting him, may he rest in peace.

Tommy , i first met you as a lovely innocent boy.
I was entranced by your love of nature in all its forms.
I remember the day you turned up to our door bearing two baby wild squall crows in your hand.
We were all excited and delighted to see them.
Their nest had been thrown to the ground.
The poor wee creatures were abandoned.
We both reared them until they were ready for the wild in the woods in lisgoold.
They were released with a little degree of sadness.


You grew into a fine man - a man of the sea from which you gained consumate knowledge.

You made the estuary safe for all users by marking the channel.

The bank far down the estuary gave you your own quite place for reading, you were a lover of historical , geographical , philosophical and literature of all kinds.

I have great memories of many good discussions over the cuppas in my kitchen.

These sessions will live in my memory.

Finally Tommy !
You were a great man of integrity , courage and self-effacement. Not to mention the twin humility and heroism.
I will not elaborate on the last two as I think it would be in accordance with your wishes.

Oh Tommy, how can you be gone? We had such wonderful chats down there at the slip, on the river, and only last Tuesday when we enjoyed a cup and a small bite at Bolte. We sat in your shed and looked through your books, we caught bass and white trout, flatties and mullet around the upper harbour in the relaxed comfort of your chairs. King of the river...... Tom, you were such a firm and positive friend to me, and now you are gone. I will miss your cheerful friendship, wisdom and expertise. I offer my sincere condolences to your family. RIP. My sincere condolences to the O Brien family on the passing of Tommy. We were at school together all the way to leaving cert,a pure nice guy. I am sure he is having a good chat with Michael Wall and Sean Beausang now. They were great friends, also gone too soon. RIP.
