I was a student in Farranferris from 1971 to 1976. Tim taught me English, history and geography. He was my teacher for each of my five years in the school. He was a gifted teacher, devoted to his subjects and there will never be another teacher like him in his novel approach to classroom methodologies. It would be impossible to emulate his magical qualities in the classroom. He had a wonderful sense of humour. He seemed to love his job and he was extremely kind to his students. Anytime I meet ex-Farna boys they always refer to his unique way of making us happy. His classes were full of gleeful surprises, novelties and laughs. He had artifacts from all over the world such as native American arrowheads, a vast collection of First World War memorabilia and fossils of all descriptions. We sung songs about windmills, made model spitfire planes and Mr Horgan created spectacular volcanoes using a simple chemistry set. He surprised us with delicious ice-cream when we were studying Italy. No wonder we loved History and Geography so much! After school he ran a stamp club. It was exciting and fun….and was yet another excuse for Tim to help the boarders settle into life away from home. He brought us on geographical tours around the county of Cork and taught our eyes to recognise every geographical feature imaginable in our native landscape. I'll never forget Mr Horgan. Mícheál Ó hAithiarna, Mainistir na Corann (Fearann Phiarais 1971 - 1976)
Very sorry to hear of Tim’s passing. He was a gentle, kind man, a great teacher and proud Cork man. I don’t think I ever heard him raise his voice or get cross but he had no trouble keeping a calm class because he was so interesting and had the respect of all his students. He was the ultimate people person, with time for everyone and interest in everyone’s story, whether you liked GAA or not or whether your interests were his or not. He is very fondly remembered – may he be rewarded for all his kindnesses. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
RIP Tim. Will miss your lovely letters etc. Love to all the family at this sad time.
Sincere condolences to all of the Horgan family. Mr Horgan was a great man.

Dear Tim,

Just recently, I found your letter from November 2nd 2004, which you sent along with an old number 13 Farna jersey.

As was your intention, the jersey did bring fond memories at the time, though finding your words many years on, has been the best reminder.

In your letter, you wrote about how our U16+B Munster final victory over Dingle meant so much to you personally, having been cheated on another final victory by them a few years previously. This being due to the scandal of them changing the ref behind your back. For you, it was the sweetest triumph in what was a great year for the school winning Cork senior double (Callaghan and Simcox), the Cork U16A football and the Munster U16+B football. You said that we’d have won the U16+A competition too, but you couldn’t chance entering in case we went far in the Harty.

You epitomise the spirit of our school; and though you and your beloved Farna are gone from us now, your legacy will long be remembered.

With a bit of luck, another great person will come along years from now, to pen a revised edition to Cork’s Hurling Story to include plenty more tales of All-Ireland victories for the Rebels!

All the best...

Willie O'Halloran

My condolences to the Horgan family. I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Horgan. He was a great teacher and contributed hugely to the positive experience that many of us had in Farna. He was genial and took an interest in the lads that he taught. If they often walked slowly down the avenue pretending to be oblivious to the delay caused to the red Ford Escort behind, he never let it linger.

He didn't just teach a syllabus or prepare you for an exam - he imparted a love of the English language which stayed with me and many others thereafter. He was no doubt pleased to see some Farna alumni make a successful career from this gift in the years long after Farna had closed its doors and would acknowledge their success with a postcard or note.

Mr. Horgan made literature and poetry accessible. His reading aloud in class from "Soundings", "Hamlet", "Julius Ceasar", "The Catcher in the Rye", "Goodnight Mr. Tom" and "Huckleberry Finn" was a pleasure, remembered fondly. With these tales, he evoked the world for his students through a prosaic lens.

His "word of the day" gave a gift of vocabulary long before spellcheck and Microsoft Word that still elicits a knowing smile when you see or hear words like "vicissitudes" or "preponderance" describing some everyday event. He loved Brian Dillons and Cork GAA and contributed hugely to football teams in Farna while writing warmly and wonderfully about his passion.

Thank you for everything Mr. Horgan and for making a difference.
Sincere condolences to Jean and Noel and the extended Horgan family on the sad passing of your beloved Tim. His kindness of heart and gentleness of manner endeared him to all. Rest in peace.
Deepest condolences to the Horgan family. My memories of Tim in Farranferris were as a very good and sincere teacher and a real gentleman .
My deepest sympathies to the Horgan family on the sad passing of Tim. I was fortunate enough to be a student of Tim's in Farranferris between 1995 & 2000. Tim taught me English and was our football coach also. We had many great days on and off the pitch. Tim was a wonderful teacher and had a great passion for all sport, and his books on Cork Hurling and Farranferris Hurling are truly fantastic. He also was a great Brian Dillons clubman. Whenever I met Tim after leaving Farranferris, I was always struck by his warm and engaging personality and his genuine interest in how I and fellow classmates was doing. Tim will be sadly missed. RIP
Sincere condolences to the Horgan Family on Tim's passing. Mr. Horgan taught me geography in Farranferris (84-89). He was an excellent teacher and an all round nice gentleman. May he rest in peace.
Deepest condolences to the Horgan family on the poignant passing of Tim.

He lived as a true gentleman, the best of them, not a bad bone in his body and not an ounce of guile, which are rare qualities in teacher circles and culture.
He epitomised all that is good in human nature and showed by example how we should treat others. Everyone was comfortable in his presence.

The abundance of respect and kindness Tim showed to many in this temporary place will surely stand to him now in the presence of our Lord for all eternity
Sincere condolences to the Horgan family. May Tim rest in peace
My sincere condolences to the extended Horgan family and friends on the passing of Tim. I was very fortunate to have Mr. Horgan as my Geography teacher in the early to mid 70s - he had a modern enthusiastic approach without any bias which was so refreshing. Over the years, we would run into each other, occassionally, in town and I really enjoyed our brief exchanges. With genuine interest Tim would always enquire as to how individual past pupils were doing. He was such a wonderful man who just happened to be an excellent teacher, writer & broadcaster! Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Deepest condolences to the Horgan family on the sad passing of Tim. Taught me in Farranferris. A super teacher and an absolute gentleman. May he Rest in Peace.
Sincere condolences to all the Horgan family, may he rest in peace.
Sincere sympathies to Noel, Jean and and the extended Horgan family. I was saddened to learn of the passing of Tim: teacher, author, journalist, broadcaster, raconteur, football coach and gentleman. I attended Farna between 1988 and 1993, and while Tim did not teach me, I did get to know him on the football fields, where he did trojan work to develop Gaelic football in the College.
I worked with Tim during my HDip year and subsequently as a member of staff: he was a wonderful mentor and always up for a laugh at break time! He was heartbroken - as we all were - when Fatna closed its doors for the final in 2005.
Tim was so proud of Farna's past pupils who featured on Cork teams., and was always the keynote speaker when alumni returned to the College with the Liam McCarthy Cup and other trophies. His passion for Cork GAA always shone through in his words.
He penned three wonderful books for posterity: Cork's Hurling Story, Farna's Hurling Story and a Christy Ring biography. These books are treasures. They are so well researched and written.
Rest easy Tim. I'll miss your handwritten letters, too.
Condolences to the Horgan family on the passing of Tim. He was a gentleman always. RIP
My Sincerest Sympathies to The Horgan Family on the sad passing of Tim. I always looked forward to his Geography classes. He was such a gentleman. May he Rest In Peace
My sincerest sympathies to the Horgan family on Tim's passing. He was a wonderful gentleman, a fabulously entertaining teacher and a great correspondent in my years following Farranferris.

Mr. Horgan was one of those few teachers who liked to stay in contact with students after they left Farranferris. It was always a joy to receive his occasional notes over the years. His teaching was always peppered with entertaining anecdotes and sporting tales. It was so clear that he had a great love for all the lads and this motivated everything he did, in particularly his long dedication to football at Farna.

His books were so wonderfully researched and entertaining. They have a distinguished place in our library. As our sons now attend the new school in Farranferris, I am delighted to see that Mr. Horgan and his football team photographs still grace the walls at Farranferris.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

My sympathies to Tim's family at this sad time. Mr Horgan was a lovely man who enriched my time in Farna, whether in the classroom for English classes or in the top/lower Harty playing football. He is fondly remembered by many many students who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him over the years. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to the Horgan family on the passing of Tim. Mr.Horgan as we called him was our English and Geography teacher and our football coach. As teacher and pupil we crossed swords once or twice, especially when he threw me out of Geography class in LC and i refused to go back. We became lifelong friends and he was a very very thoughtful, kind man. His passion for Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. always fascinated me. His handwritten letters and little notes with pictures from the newspapers were always appreciated. Mr Horgan, you were a great character and we were all lucky to have you as a teacher and friend. May you rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to the Horgan family on the sad occasion of Tim’s passing. It was a privilege to be taught english and coached football by him through my time in Farna - ‘92-‘97. A true Corkman who, in later years when we might sometimes meet on the streets of the city, always made sure to enquire at length about the well-being of siblings, parents, and old school friends.
Rest in peace Mr. Horgan.

Sincere condolences to the Horgan family. Tim Horgan taught me in Farna in 1969-74 and gave great support to my late father Liam Milner in publishing articles and books on Cork local history.
May we please pass our deepest condolences on to all of the Horgan family. Our late parents, Billy & Pat Buckley, always spoke so highly of Tim, and all the family, and had such great affection for you all. As we were based in the UK, Tim used to forward the local papers with clippings of recent Cork and Brian Dillon’s Hurley matches to Dad, and they used to reminisce and correspond about the great Cork teams of the 50’s & 60’s, which brought our Dad such pleasure. Tim was also generous enough to allow our Dad to make a small contribution to one of the books he published, which again brought so much happiness. Rest in Peace.

Mr. Horgan. R.I.P. My deepest condolences to all who knew Tim, his family and friends, and club members at Brian Dillon's. Knew Tim from Farranferris way back in 1987 when I started as a 1st year and had the pleasure of Tim being both my English and Geography teacher at one stage while also our football Manager and the bond of playing for both College/school and Club gave us a unique bond. I think I can say that Tim was always very well liked by all members of our tremendous football squad and everything he did was to better us as players and help us achieve on what we thought was a high platform! I hope we re-paid his efforts. Tim was always a gentleman and great to have a few words with in passing. I am honoured to have known Tim and sad today to hear of his passing.
