Sincere condolences to you all on the death of Tom. He was one of Cork’s great characters; learned, generous and witty. I have very fond memories of Tom, he always showed me great kindness and generosity. His knowledge was boundless and he carried it with humility; his commitment to equality was inspirational. So so sorry to hear of Tom's death. We had conversations in recent years around St Lukes that seemed like natural extensions of many late night conversations indoors and outdoors on Union Quay years ago.

I worked in Merrick’s Foundry with Tom’s father, Jerh.
I remember his telling us of his son’s journeying to Greystones to work as a clerk with the Post Office.
He was very proud of him.
It was a big mark of progress at the time.

The Phoenix was a home from home. There was great music, great craic and great people and Tom was at the centre of it all. He always seemed to have a screwdriver handy. There are so many memories. Holy hours, Tom saying, “lads, I’m closing the doors so if you want to leave, you better go now, otherwise you’ll be here till 4.00. Nobody left.
