Tom FITZGERALD

Bhí meas iontach ag muintir Bheanntraí, an cheantar agus gach éinne a raibh aithne acu air faoi a phearsantacht, uaisleacht, obair ar son an cheantair, phoblacht, teanga ‘s tír. Agus níos mó gan amhras.

I first met Tom through Bantry Toastmasters Club, which he founded. This was another example of Tom’s philanthropy, largesse, community spirit and sense of adventure and possibility. It would have been far easier for him to use his valuable time in his extremely busy international businesses, etc.

Instead, he started the club and gave countless hours in developing and expanding it and benefiting the members and beyond. I can honestly say that the experience was life-changing for me. Thug sé súil eile at fad dom.

Tom himself had joined Toastmasters in the United States and likewise found it extremely beneficial. And so it was typical of Tom: He wanted to share what he himself had gained. And Toastmasters is only one example of his community development work. His influence and legacy is far greater, valuable and valued than he probably realized.

So sorry to read of Tom’s sudden death. He was always such a pleasure to meet and chat to. I have a strong memory of him dressed in his tuxedo presenting the wonderful young Bantry singers perform at St Brendan’s church with great enthusiasm and warmth. He will be missed.
