I’m very sad to learn of Tom’s death. He was my English tutor in my first year in St Pat’s and one of my lecturers in the subsequent two years of my degree. Tom had a great impact on us in his lectures and tutorials and his passion for his subject was not lost on me. It certainly helped strengthen my love for poetry and literature. He always spoke fondly of Co Louth. I now teach in Collon National School, a place with strong connections to Tom. I will remember him fondly, May he rest in peace. Sincere sympathies to his entire family.
Very sad to hear of Tom's passing. He was a great colleague in St Pat's College of Education, and a person of the utmost integrity, decency and humane consideration. One was aware of his passion for English literature, the meticulous care with which he prepared for his lectures and seminars and his tremendous ability to inspire and enthuse students. Chats with Tom were always liable to be interesting, far-ranging and insightful. Sincere condolences to members of his family, his relatives and friends.

I'm very sorry to learn of Tom's death.. He was a really interesting teacher in Gonzaga in 1971-2, where he took our 6th year (i.e. post-Leaving Cert) group. He had no difficulty in managing the class, and was both encouraging and, where appropriate, mildly sardonic with uppity types such as me. We studied The Wasteland and Waiting For Godot amongst other works which I suspect I would not otherwise ever have considered.
.
Please pass on my sympathies to his family and friends.
Yours sincerely,
Eunan O'Halpin
