I send my sincere sympathy to Carmel, Pat,Tony and Martin on the sad loss of their dear brother Tom. I had the privilege of competing against Tom during the 70's. I recollect a race in Cahir when he was in a 'comeback' phase of his racing career. He attacked from behind about 5 miles to the finish. He was never caught and crossed the finishing line alone. I am sorry that I wasn't able to attend his funeral, as it was too late before I received the sad news. May Tom's gentle soul rest in eternal peace.

Tom seemed to be in his late 30s for about 40 years. A quiet, good-natured, enigmatic presence on the street, his work ethic and dedication to his craft was inspirational to us.
It was sad to see him grounded latterly, when he had a clear preference for speed. But now he is free again and tearing up that highway to heaven. Quietly. At or near the front.
Carmel, Pat, Grainne and all the Kiely’s we are sending you a great big hug across the miles from London. We will join you over the airwaves.
Tom is forever etched in the roadscape of our minds, particularly that piece between Kilheffernan and Glenbower that swirls around the foot of Slievenamon– Tom, you own it.

So sorry to hear of Toms passing. I never knew Tom personally but I just had to say a few words in memory of him. I remember him passing by our house when I was a child. He Always wore black cycling shorts and usually no top. He was brown as a berry and a flyer on the bike. Traveling at phenomenal speed and hard as nails. I have great memories of watching him go by. Hail, rain, sleet or scorching sun never bothered him. Everyone down our way used know him as Kiely.we were in awe of him. When I was a child I was convinced he was one of the top cyclists in the world.
