A favourite memory of my 2003 trip to visit family in Ireland was when my uncles Tom, Joe, and Vincent took me to the Galway horse races. True to the Mulhern style, they teased me throughout the day, laughing at my choice of horses to bet on and how I played it safe, putting down no more than 10 Euro each time. They were experts in the sport, and as a fifteen year old girl, I was not.

After six of the seven races, I was up about 30 Euro and between the three of them, they were down a few hundred. I teased them back for their losses and they suggested we leave to beat the traffic out of the car park. I insisted we stay for the final race and probably due to their unfamiliarity of a headstrong teenage girl, they gave in.

I put ten Euro down on a horse named Mickey Campbell, purely chosen for his fun name, and they all laugh at the odds stacked against him. Minutes later, who finishes first, but Mickey Campbell. Uncle Tom did a double take between the track, the screen, and then the track again and says,

“….Your Mickey Campbell won! He actually won!”

Baffled, my three uncles put their heads together and estimate I won no less than 500 Euro. And they’re right. It’s more money than I’ve ever held in my life and I don’t know what’s more satisfying: the cash or the fact that I get to tease them back all the way home.

Uncle Tom, thank you for taking your niece to partake in your favourite past-time. It was such a fun and joyful memory. Rest in peace.
