Tremendously sorry to hear of the passing of Tom. Although he preceded my time in the Irish Independent, I knew him from his time working with Fianna Fáil. We were both in Thurles on the day in the 2002 general election when Bertie Ahern was canvassing in Liberty Square, running from The Arch Bar down to Hayes Hotel. Tom was proud to be back on home turf and always spoke fondly of his Tipperary roots. Appropriately, today, his book 'The race for the Aras' on the 2011 presidential election campaign is particularly relevant as President Higgins is being discussed. My sincere condolences to Tom's family and friends in Thurles and Dublin.

My deepest sympathy and private prayers to Catherine,Austen ,Erin,Ann& Tom...its not an over statement to write..Tom was a quitely genious with grace,manners,true integrity beyound measure,even as a teenager,CBS school collegue,shared Best Man role at my brothers Michael's wedding in 1983.Tom spent half his teenager youth in our family home,where his very presence brought real joy.."craic" always.
He even then,was a most natural consumate Gentleman,with a natural with of a Tommy Tiernan & the Brain & ability of a Seamus Heaney.O Lord truely the family, the world has been robbed..of a most exceptional kind to his core,charaismatic & deeply ethical Dad,Cousin,friend & later national & international journalist who exuded professonalism, utter kindness in equal measure.His love of music,art & openess endered him to me even then at 14 as we all walked up the Avenue to school.He was always destined for greatness,that impich smile & shimmering eyes,pink shirts a trademark,what bravery,he simply brought Colour to the 70's in a somewhat black and white Thurles.
He leaves us now to an assured suite in Heaven,Tom,Neighbour,dear old friend ,who always looked out for those less fortunate .
"THE ROAD HAS RISEN TO MEET HIM AND THE WIND..WAS ALWAYS AT HIS BACK"!
His late ordinary saint Gran..Mrs O'Dwyer..both now strolling in Heaven's gardens..& Tom..making notes with a pen in steroids!!
