Tomás Ó Maolalaidh (Lally)

" 'an gleann inár togadh mé' ..that poem was written by a man who had reached the end of his days and was sad... I've reached the end of my days and I'm happy... and the reason I'm happy is all around me" ...Tomás's words of appreciation of his family to his family on the occasion of his 80th birthday...... You have a beautiful family Tomás and it has been our privilege to be part of yer lives ... the Lallys in Mountbellew have made the atmosphere of so many occasions over the years... We have so many happy memories of the visits to Belderney, the sing songs, the laughter, June's brilliant piano playing, the hospitality...

As an uncle, you always took an interest in what we were up to and took the time to encourage, to advise and to listen. This was all the more remarkable given the wealth of talent of your own children and grandchildren. Your generosity has not been forgotten. The kindness, thoughtfulness, patience, tolerance and cheerfulness of your family are a credit to yourself and to June. Their obvious love of family has not come from the wind I think.

When Diarmaid mentioned "the collector of old nails that needed straightening", I reacted with surprise and laughter for that is exactly the sort of thing I do myself! ...I never knew I shared this practice in common with Tomás!

It was heartening to learn how well regarded Tomás was by his neighbours, friends and former students. The people lining the street in Mountbellew and the story of the farewell that took place in Portiuncula were poignant tributes to Tomás and must have been a great consolation to ye all at a sad time. Thank you for allowing us to be part of that farewell and to share in yer grief at what must have been a time of intense emotion for yerselves.

Tomás, I will always remember your laugh. The day after our twins were born, I could hear you laughing down the hall as the nurses chased you to tell you there were no visitors allowed. You still came in, fair play to you, and we were all delighted to see you.
On my confirmation day, I remember you rushed up to stand beside me as my Godfather. The other Godparents were not so diligent, and unfortunately this meant that the teacher asked all the parents to stand for us instead.
I still treasure the thoughtful gifts you gave me for my First Holy Communion. The big Enid Blyton bed time stories book will be read to my children - I spent countless nights staying up to read them in my own childhood. The little elephant nightlight you gave on the same occasion is on every night in my girl's room.
Tomás, there will never be another. I can't imagine how your immediate family must be coping with your loss - my sincerest condolences to June and all the family. It is rare in life to come across someone who always seemed to be positive, and your loss will surely be felt by many more.
Please God, we will all get to the same destination as you some day, and we will hear that roaring laugh again, and see that tall man with the big smile coming round the corner, welcoming us home.
