Tommy Campbell

So sorry to hear of the recent death of Tommy. As a neighbour of Tommy's over 40 years ago, I found him to be a most decent man. He drove trucks with my father, and, throughout the years, gave me many a lift to Dublin. Intelligent and well read, he regaled me with stories of current affairs and international politics on many dark winter mornings.
Never shy of hard work, he turned to cutting timber to supplement his income. As a young boy, I would occasionally help him out. On the road home with the load, he would lean across on the dumper, and press a 50p coin into my hand. It wasn't just the 50p coin that was important, though not an insignificant amount in itself, but rather, through the underlying kidness and consideration, Tommy demonstrated the defining characteristics of the original gentleman.
Smart in dress and deportment, and possessing a relaxed and amiable manner, he was always great company.
I met his son Johnny recently, who has turned out to be every inch a gentleman, his father was.
To his wife Eileen and family members, we extend our deepest sympathies
