Rest in peace, Tom.
A very interesting man; highly intelligent, could give a well informed opinion on any subject, excelled in making witty remarks, had an infectious sense of fun and he was the best of good company.
He was a man comfortable in the world, and when he looked in the mirror I'd say he was happy with the person looking back at him.
He gave great service to Milltown Drama and was in at least two plays performed by Tuam Theatre Guild including one on the festivals' circuit. I was his driver for some long nights on the road throughout the West. That was in the early 1970s.
From my boyhood days I recall Tom and our next-door neighbour, the great Johnny Connolly, playing hurling for Michael Davitt's, the team put together by the legendary Pat Heaney.
Best of all, from when I was about 12 or 13, I was allowed to join Tom & Johnny in the bog, when they took their breaks to discuss the state of the world. They cut turf "in co" as it was called at the time.
I have not laughed as much since. Pat Shortt and Tommy Cooper, between them, could not have scripted the daily shows those two men put on to amuse me and themselves.
Two good men - - the real Ireland.
In Parkroe, Johnny Connolly is not forgotten.
Tom Canney, too, will be fondly remembered.
Sincere condolences to Tommy’s relatives and friends. May he Rest In Peace.

Rest in peace Tommy. My memories of you at our kitchen table with my dad on a Saturday morning, with the racing part of the paper spread out between ye, looking for a winner or two are precious.
