It was with much sadness and a deep sense of loss that I heard of the recent passing of Tommy Healy of Tremane hurling fame. He was a member of the the Tremane team that became the first from Roscommon to win a Connacht senior hurling title when they famously defeated Kiltormer of Galway by 2-7 to 1-9 back in 1976.
It was though my numerous visits to Athleague for the hurling matches over the years that I got to know Tommy and he was a hurling man through and through. He served as Roscommon Hurling Board Chairperson for 17 years and gave years of incredible loyal and dedicated service to his home county.
Tommy had a fondness for Irish traditional and country music and my twice weekly late night shows on Midwest Radio were regular guests in the family home. It was a privilege to include another ‘shout-out’ for him the last time we met some time ago.
It was always a privilege to meet Tommy and share hurling memories from over the years. My condolences to his wife Lena, their sons, Damien and Paul, and to his extended family and many friends in Roscommon GAA at this sad time. I will have a wee tribute to Tommy in next week's issue of The Mayo News.
