My sincere and heartfelt condolences to all of Tony's family and friends. Tony was an absolute star of a person. My time, and that of so many others in St. Anne's in Maynooth, was all the richer and better for Tony being there - always funny, always supportive and deeply thoughtful about all manner of things academic, musical and otherwise. Above all else, and as he'd often say himself about others, Tony was a true scholar and a gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Tony's family and the wider Cunningham family. When I stayed in Cunninghams house in 1968 for a few months my only contribution was to help the kids with homework and Tony was happy to do it.
I lost touch when I returned to Mayo but followed his progress to Maynooth where he was lecturing in Sociology. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

So shocked & saddened to hear the news of Tony’s untimely passing. He was my lecturer as a mature student, who had a profound impact on me, and then became a colleague when I started teaching in Maynooth. A true gentleman, a brilliant writer, and a passionate lecturer whom students loved. He will be greatly missed.

I knew Tony when he was teaching in the Department of Adult and Community Education. I admired his academic strength but particularly I admired his unique perspective on things I took for granted. In that process Tony opened my mind .. and sometimes that was a struggle.
I sympathise with Tony's family on their loss and the loss to society.

Tony was an inimitable presence with a thoroughly inspiring character. The world is poorer for his departure, but so much richer for his legacy.
