Looking back he strikes me as a little like the Dumbledore of his department, if you'll forgive the clumsy comparison. Rest in peace Tony.

Sincere sympathy, Kit, on Tony's passing. Remember you used joke about the difference between women ("they are sociable, know how to gab gab gab") and their strong silent men ("who remembered, but didn't go visiting"). Such memories of Tony. Highpoints, connected with the UCC Film Society: collecting the week's heavy reels of film from the station (train down from Dublin, had to be got to G1 by Wednesday night without fail, probably across town on the back of a bike).
And Tony's great love and enthusiasm for film (and music). His greatest love, Jean Renoir's "La Grande Illusion", with Jean Gabin. A gentleman to the core, he would of course love a classic about rejecting war and creating peace.

It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Tony. He was a real gentleman and scholar. I will always remember him as a gifted teacher of physics. His inspirational lectures created a great love of physics among generations of his students. His warm personality made it very easy for students to approach him with questions or to discuss aspects of his lecture. It was wonderful that he still maintained a link with the Physics Department after his retirement. He always found time to stop and chat with us. His radiant smile and good humour always shone brightly. My sincere condolences to his family on their sad loss. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to you Kit and the extended family. I remember Tony as a kind, generous and thoughtful man. Not without a good sense of humour. And a quiet determination to get the most out of life.
Very sorry to hear of Tony's death. We were in entirely different fields of endeavour but I was always struck by Tony's wide-ranging, open-minded interests, his enthusiasm for the arts, his good humour, and his ability to engage with everyone in the academic community. He was always a joy to meet. My sympathies to his family and close friends.
Tony was the face of Physics when he welcomed me to UCC, as my First Year student mentor. I recall still with great clarity the cup of tea and biscuits that he served when I had my first meeting with him in his office. Friendly and compassionate, Tony was a fine ambassador for the department.

His lectures on Optics would be peppered with phrases to make the journey of learning more accessible and build the confidence of the students grappling with the maths and ideas presented. "It's just a definition" and "the mathematics are quite simple".

He wanted us to pick up the building blocks he laid out before us and to engage on the same journey he undertook to discover science and the structure of the universe about us.

Thank you Tony, may you rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to all of Tony's family. He made me feel very welcome on my arrival at UCC almost 30 years ago.

Very sad to hear of Tony's passing - sincerest condolences to his wife and his family.
Tony taught me Optics, Mechanics and Atomic & Nuclear Physics in the 1990s, and I learned so much from him. He lectured with enthusiasm, had a good sense of humour and was always genuine, supportive and personable. He inspired generations of physics students.
Tony was a remarkable gentleman with a wide range of interests, on which it was always a pleasure to listen to him. A man of the arts as well as science, he had a deep love of music and played the guitar. He also recorded audio books for the blind.
Very thoughtful and generous, after I had left UCC, a copy of 'Mr. Jelly Roll' mysteriously appeared through my parent's letter box and the mutual friend who delivered it told me Tony had been on holidays in Scotland, thought of me and bought this lovely present.
Rest In Peace.
Brian Goggin (London).
My sincere condolences to Kit and family on Tony's passing. I am immensely proud and grateful that I completed my Ph.D. under his kind and wise supervision. I've spent the last few days remembering the insight and wisdom of the man, talking about history and cricket, the glorious fun it all was. Even up to earlier this year, he was still urging me to better myself but even more importantly, to get that label into exactly the right place on that diagram! I miss him terribly already.
