I will always remember the joy (and initial shock) of seeing Tony at the Market Cross for the first time, bringing such joy and fun to everyone who passed by. What an amazing brilliant man. My Dad and his mate Jerry Bennett first told me of the escapades of Doc Shiels. As I grew up he became a bit of a legend. Tony was larger than life and I'm glad he was around to influence mine.

So very sorry to learn of “Doc’s” passing. The great music and song evenings in Courtney’s pub in High Street will be remembered always with Doc and Christine in the centre of all the fun in the early to mid seventies. Some of Irelands very best performed in this happy place over the decades. Tony “doc” would sing, recite and tell yarns as good as the best. Easy to be in his company whether on his own or in a crowd, a mighty love of life in all its forms, a great rogue on occasions and his departure from our midst will be greatly regretted as he rejoins his beloved Christine. We wish to tender our sincere sympathy to Lucy, Kate, Gareth,Ewan and Megan and to the extended Shiels families on their most grievous loss. May he enjoy eternal peace and happiness.
