What a legendary character ...! The Singing Cowboy packed pubs and lounges all over Mayo and neighbouring parts of Roscommon in the 1970s, 80s and 90. He was a huge attraction in the front lounge at the famous Beaten Path between Claremorris and Balla in those days. Tony was a born entertainer and a very fine singer. American country legend, George Jones, was his hero. He was tuned in to my show last Sunday night as we celebrated Mayo's famous win over Dublin in Croke Park the previous evening. He told his daughter Davina that he held back from sending in a request for a George Jones song because of the volume of requests and goodwill messages for the Mayo team and said he would send it in on Wednesday night. So sad to realise that I was playing George Jones songs in tribute to him last night. Tony was 'auld stock' in so many ways ...a word and a smile for all. As the song says, This Is Where The Cowboy Rides Away.
