Sincere sympathy to Tony's brothers and sister and his extended family. I was privileged to have known and worked with Tony for many years in Irish Sugar and later in his retirement. He was an out and out gentleman and a genuinely nice person. He played his hurling always with great skill and determination and was always sporting and was always a pleasure to watch. He will be remembered with great affection by his many friends in Carlow.

So sorry to hear of your Passing Tony. We enjoyed many a puck around and training in the Cossets pitch as well as many a good match, like one evening in Comer when both of us lost some teeth and it was only a challenge game. The intensity was part of our game.

Those who think deep hurling analysis is an invention of the modern era never met Tony Whelan! To listen to Tony's take on a hurling match - before, during and after - was an education in tactical awareness and technical observation and this decades before there were cameras and lap-tops.
During is own playing days here in Carlow with Pearses, Palatine and St Fintan's (Ballinabranna) and 'moonlighting' with his beloved Colligan Rockies Tony's attention to detail and preparation was also way ahead of its time ... the spare hurls were shaved so as to be the exact same balance of his No 1 stick ... physical training on his own outside of team training was a must .... while he had the knack of turning the old fashioned puck-around, already a skill sharpening session, into a match-paced visualisation session of shooting scenarios including free-taking accuracy from all angles.
Tony, an energetic, skilful, snappy operator, hurled with the Carlow county team for a decade and a half and would you believe his first senior start in red, yellow and green was in Walsh Park against his native Waterford! And the Waterford had few more staunch supporters than Tony Whelan who as a teenager enjoyed he thrill of the Decies 1959 All-Ireland triumph.
Tony's passion for and knowledge of the small ball game will now enhance the ranks of men hurling on the level lawns of God.
Farewell Tony, thanks for sharing your knowledge, thanks for the memories.
