With sincere sympathy to Jerome, Annette, Mark, Conor, Leah, Brian, Loretta, Bryanna, Eugene and Maggie. Irene and I have known the Hughes family for more than 40 yrs. Val and Monica were to most selfless people we ever met. When we were married in 1983 they packed their three young children and traveled down to Shannon only to find out there was a strike interrupting flights. Instead of returning home they opted to take a bus up to Belfast to ensure they would make it to the States and attend our wedding which we are eternally grateful for. Val and Monica made a lifetime of sacrifices. They raised three wonderful kids, countless number of nieces and nephew and four grandchildren that they absolutely adored. If you arrived at 7 Healy Ter at 10 in the morning or 11 at night you would have been accepted with open arms accompanied by a great cup of tea, freshly baked white or brown bread or whatever was leftover from dinner. I recall shortly after Val went into partnership around 1990 we visited them when our daughter was 4 yrs old and Val had Kim on his lap singing " Hughes O'Boyle Fuel Oil"! Back in the day if you needed a phone they had one! Their house was always nice and warm! Val sacrificed yet again when his friend and my father in law Stanley Wheeler was entering Hospice here in the States and he came to say goodbye. Life is too short! I once heard an old saying, that good friends are the medicine of life. Well that saying would sit perfectly on Val Hughes broad shoulders.
What a great fellow.
I feel honoured not alone to have known Val all my life, but I also feel privileged to have graced so many playing fields with him on so many great occasions over many years.
Thanks Val for being my minder when I was a young fellow starting off my playing days.

A powerful and elegant full back,built like a tank and a tough as nails, Val wore the famous saffron and blue with great pride and passion.

It’s hard to believe that in the space of a few short weeks , we have lost two great stalwarts from our 1973 Championship winning team.
As you make your final towards the Pearly gates of Heaven, I know for sure that all the formed Knockmore greats who have gone before you Val, will be there to meet you and lead you to a place where the streets are all littered with gold.

To all the Hughes family and extended families and to Val’s many friends I offer you all my deepest and heartfelt sympathies.
I am thinking about you all at this particularly very difficult and sad time in your lives.
