I’m in complete shock reading this! Claire, I am so so sorry for this devastating loss. Words can’t describe the pain you and your family must be feeling.

I’ll never forget our afternoons making up problems with our computers so the hunky IT guy could come and fix it for us, just so you could chat him up! He was such a lovely, genuine guy and I’m absolutely heartbroken for you and your beautiful children!

He will be forever remembered and loved across the world!

Van and I shared a close bond from childhood, and those memories will always stay with me. He was more than a cousin to me. He was a constant presence in my life, and someone I loved dearly.

Our hearts break for his wife Claire and his children. May you feel surrounded by love, strength, and support in the days ahead, and may Van’s spirit live on through the beautiful memories you hold.

P.S. Tjom… ek hoor die Sharks het gewen. Ek kon nie eers die game kyk nie- daar was nie jy om voor en ná die tyd te text en mekaar op te hype nie. Dit het net nie dieselfde gevoel nie en sal nooit weer wees nie. Ek het namens ons albei ’n doppie gedrink. Ek mis jou vreeslik.

It was an absolute privilege to have known Van and to call him my friend.
He poured his heart into his family, his friends, and everyone lucky enough to cross his path. He lived his words to the fullest: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
A gentle giant whose laughter filled a room. Van became part of my New Zealand family and I will forever be grateful for the love, the care, and the sense of belonging he gave me. I’ll treasure the jokes, the lockdown memories, the competitive Uno games, the pure GC moments, and his classic reminders to buy new socks.
My heart is with Claire, his beautiful children, and all who loved him. Losing him is a heartbreak beyond words. I’ll carry the gift of his friendship with me always, and he will be so deeply missed.
Rest easy, my friend. Thank you for everything x

Words cannot describe how heartbroken I am for you Claire and your beautiful boys and all of Vans family and friends. He was an absolute gentleman, and the kindness he shown to all his neighbours and the community was a true reflection of the man he was. I can't begin to say how much he will be missed among us all. Van im still numb with shock. Not quite sure to say. To Claire and the boys kia kaha ( stand strong). Rest in eternal peace Van.

What an incredibly hard piece to be writing - but not anywhere near as hard as what Claire and the kiddos must be going through.

Van wore his heart on his sleeve and what a beautiful heart it was. Always willing to lend a hand, always willing to listen, always smiling and positive. He had such a big impact on the people around him and will leave a gaping hole.

When we think of Van we remember his smile and his vibrant energy. He had so much love to share and we know he will be dearly missed by all. A go-getter; a husband, dad and son worth celebrating.
