My sympathy is with you all, as I know how Father John was so loved and valued by you all, and of course, by his sisters, your mothers. He was a stalwart and huge spiritual support to the family at all times, and made all the family milestones and rituals extra meaningful, in being present with love love and care. May he rest in peace, after a life of such goodness. Truly, the ‘end of an era’ in many ways.

So sad to hear of Canon Fitzgibbon’s death this week RIP. He was a member in Skerries Bridge Club for many years a brilliant player even in his latter years, it was always a pleasure to play with him or against him. Also met him on numerous occasions at race meetings. A great man, may he rest in peace.

Met him many times whenever he was holidaying with Auntie Cel in Askeaton.

Thinking of the Canon at this sad time. I often spoke with him about his time in Arklow- he told me once he had been called to give last rites in the 1960's to the chaps found in the german submarine that was discovered then and had got stuck on the Arklow (sand)bank during the war. He lived the history, with the people who streets are named after now- Oscar Traynor, the bishop who wanted the small biscuits in Cork at Lent!! A very clever man, who read a lot and was interested in many things and knew all of his parishoners. His wealth of knowledge, his practicality and sermons on a Sunday morning will be missed. Lord have Mercy on John.
