I was deeply saddened to hear of Fr. Brendan's passing. He was a kind, humble gentleman and an enthralling story teller. May he Rest in Peace.

I did not know Mons. Devlin but in years gone by, I heard students say he was better than the best. Very humble, he wore it lightly. Deepest sympathy to his family on your great loss. His influence and enormous contributions in his earthly life will live on as he rests in the shadow of his native Sperrins, where the Irish language could be heard among the last speakers up to the 1950s. May his reward be great in Heaven.

My sincere condolences to James, Sara, Una, Rachel, and extended family. Brendan was a gentleman. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

My deepest Sympathies to Mons. Devlins nieces and nephews. I had the privilege of getting to know him while I worked in the college. He always had time to chat & ask me how my family were. Its not too long ago since we met, just after his time in hospital but he was still looking on the bright side. May he rest in peace

So supportive of my efforts over so many years to get TV5 that became TV5MONDE on the cable tv and radio services in Ireland ....
Did not succeed due to huge disinterest by a very committed anglophone monoglot Irish population yet Monsignor Brendan understood the great polyglot world out there as we shared our tri-lingualism in speaking our own two national languages plus French from the mainland and so many other countries .....

I consider myself very fortunate to have know Monsignor Devlin over the years. The journey started initially as a student of French in Maynooth University where his passion and enthusiasm for his subject was contagious ! Some years later as Director of the Irish College in Paris, we collaborated as a team whereby his trojan work successfully led to the restoration of today's Centre Culturel Irlandais in the heart of the Latin Quarter.
Sincere sympathy to Una, Sara and the wider Devlin families at this sad and difficult time. His life's work is done and may he now reap the goodness and kindness of his actions. With you all in spirit this morning in Maynooth and sad that I cannot be there.

Togha teangeolaí, togha teagascóra, togha treoraí. Cha bhfuil sé furasta tréithe an Doibhlinigh a chur i mbeagán focal. Fathach fir, laoch litríochta, fear feasa, uasal den scoth. Airímid muid uainn é.
Un linguiste polyvalent, un grand professeur, un mentor généreux. Il n’est pas facile de résumer les qualités du père Devlin. Un homme hors du commun, un géant de la littérature, un visionnaire au-delà de l’histoire, un noble sans pair. Il nous manque.

Father Devlin was a great man, a great priest, a subtle and deep poet, an excellent writer and an outstanding teacher.
Il m'a aidé considérablement à connaître la littérature gaélique dont il était un des meilleurs connaisseurs au monde : sa signature et son érudition figurent abondamment dans le "Patrimoine littéraire européen", que j'ai eu l'honneur de diriger et de publier. J'ai pu le rencontrer plusieurs fois : généreux, aimable, affable, distingué, il a été un des grands représentants de la culture irlandaise, un des défenseurs et des héros de la langue et de la culture gaélique. Il fut pour moi et pour d'autres un grand exemple.
Qu'il repose en paix dans la gloire de Dieu !
Cher Père Devlin, nous ne vous oublierons pas et, comme on dit dans le monde orthodoxe : "Mémoire éternelle!"

Little did I know when I attended my first lecture by the Very Rev. Mons. Devlin in the Autumn of 1989, the profound impact the man and his teaching would have on the course of my life and experience of the world. I recall vividly his recitation of Appolinaire's "Le Pont Mirabeau" as he stood gazing out the window during an afternoon tutorial in the old Arts block in Maynooth. He turned to our small group then and told us something that stayed with me: that to understand poetry, one must learn not only the language in which it is written, but also of its speakers and their culture, history, and place... and to appreciate and be welcomed by a people we must immerse ourselves in the poetry of their place. Brendan Devlin walked that talk. With immeasurable gratitude for his wisdom, support and guidance throughout my studies at Maynooth and through our correspondence long after I'd abandoned Irish shores for worlds new, I offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and to all who suffer for his passing. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

He was a lovely friendly gentleman with a warm smile and always stopped for a chat whether on campus or Maynooth's Main St and always ended chat enquiring how my brother a former French student of his was doing in France. Ar dheis Dè go raibh a anam. Fond memories of Dr. Devlin as Professor of French. He inspired me to write a dissertation on Baudelaire's writings on art for which I am deeply grateful. He gave students a thirst for learning. Thank you Brendan.

Very sorry to hear of Msgr Brendan's death. I had many lovely telephone conversations with him in recent years. Always a gentleman, always humble, always happy to talk of his native and much-loved Gortin/Rouskey. A loss for everyone who knew him.

We were very sad to hear that Fr. Brendan had passed from this life. We are part of his extended family on the Mayo side and visited our good friend, Fr. Brendan, many times in Maynooth and he visited us many times at various family events. He was a very welcoming and most interesting person who carried out significant work at home and in Europe on behalf of the Irish Catholic Church. He was a legendary man and a true scholar, and his work reflects that. His likes will never be seen again. Deepest condolences to all his family and friends at this very sad time. Codladh Samh Fr.
