Sincere condolences to all the Egar family. Back in the early seventies, in Bishopscourt, I remember crashing my bike really badly, going head over heels over the handlebars and ending up in hospital with a concussion. Bill picked me up and tried to help and was able to tell my parents (and me!) what had happened. Fifty plus year later I still remember his kindness.
My deepest sympathy to the Egar family on Bill’s sad passing.
I have fond memories of having served under Bill as his Legal Officer when he was Commanding Officer of the Irish Battalion in Lebanon in 1990. I had never met Bill prior to this. He was a committed and professional Officer and I thank him for his courtesy and kindness.

Our sincere sympathy to you Berna and all the Egar family on the sad passing of Bill. May he rest in peace.
Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, for as long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart.
To Bill’s immediate family Steve, Bruce, Laura and their extended families and to his siblings Tony & Bernadette, Margaret and I want you all to know that we deeply share your grief. Please accept our sincere condolences and be assured that Bill is at peace and no doubt safe in Heaven with his beloved Rose Mary with whom we were very close friends while at UCC.
“Go mbeidh na h-Aingeail sna Flaithís ag fanacht le Bill” is an old Irish Blessing which translates to say “May the angels in Heaven be waiting for dearest Bill”.

Sincere condolences to the Egar family on the sad passing of Bill.
I didn't have the honour of serving with him, but crossed paths with him in Collins Barracks after he had retired.
I met him recently, when he arrived in for a lunch with former colleagues - he still had a kind word and a twinkle in the eye...!
RIP Bill.

Sincere Condolences to the Egar Family on the passing of their Father Bill. My family are forever grateful to Bill and Rosemary when they kindly gave us the use of their apartment in Cairo when my mother was hospitalised with a stroke while on a visit to Egypt. My father, my brother Dominic and I were given full access to the apartment for over a week while trying to cope with my mother’s illness and arranging her repatriation. Their hospitality was selfless and generous and was hugely appreciated by myself and my father. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to Tony and the wider Egar family on the loss of gentleman Bill.
To Steve, Bruce and Laura, I was so sad to hear of the passing of your dear father.
I served with Bill twice overseas and have very fond memories of both. First occasion was when I handed over Commander of Recee Company from 53 to 54 Inf Battalion UNIFIL and then when I was Chief Operations Officer of the 67 Inf Battalion under Bill's leadership. The 67 Inf Battalion took over a very difficult and volatile situation and turned it around under Bill's relaxed, confident and supporting style of leadership, which encouraged us all to function at our best. His unit's performance was recognised by UN Command and appreciated by the local population. Also the Unit wore a Red and White lanyard, and Cork won the double Hurling and Football that year, much to your dad's delight, but we cannot take the credit for that. I appreciate you mourn the loss of your Dad, but be proud, very proud of him. May he rest in peace. Enda Breslin Col (Retd)

Heartfelt sympathy and sincere prayers to the Egar Family and to the extended Family members on the sad departure of Col. Bill to his Eternal Heavenly Reward. R.I.P.. Bill - always so friendly, welcoming, supportive and caring - forever a True Gentleman and Friend Supreme to many with a wonderful smile radiating great goodness, kindness, an inspiring strong Faith, humour, wit and sincerity...for whom Family was all-important.
Col. Bill was an Officer Supreme. It has been a great privilege to have known such a remarkable Ambassador for Ireland when he served abroad. Such a superbly approachable gentleman who when we arranged to meet at Mallow Library some years ago in the company of the late Sgt. Michael Kelly of Mallow provided such a magnificent Radio Interview and shared many photos and medals relating to his truly inspiring Army Career. He even surprised me by showing me an envelope which I had written in Calligraphy to his father many years ago and which he had preserved in his archive....such was the thoughtfulness of this remarkable Friend of so many. Another example of his supportive kindness were his phone calls as I recovered from a significant operation. May the gentle Soul of Bill rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

It is very sad to learn of Billy's passing today. Billy and his brother Tony studied with and played rugby with my late father Stephen John Tobin during their school days at Rockwell college. That friendship continued throughout their adult life when Billy was stationed in Skibbereen. This led to my introduction to Billy as he coached me in the shot putt in the car park at our old pub in Corran, Leap. I am forever greatful to Billy for his discipline and for passing on his knowledge to me. My sincere sympathy to Billy's brother Tony and nephew Tim, who have kept the connection with our family and my extended sympathy to Billy's family at this difficult time. Sincerely, Ger Tobin, Ballincollig & formerly Corran, Leap, West Cork
My sincere sympathy to Tony and the extended Egar family. Bill oozed leadership both in uniform and on the playing field and was respected by all who served with him.

Bill's service to his country and achievements as a sportsman will fittingly be the subject of many tributes over the coming days, but we knew him best as a neighbour and friend. His warm smile, upright bearing, confident presence and impeccable dress sense gave us all confidence and inspiration. A lover of music and singing, a fluent Irish speaker with an encyclopedic knowledge of Irish military history and the struggle for the Free State (in which his late father played such a prominent role), Bill was a stalwart of the “Keep Bishopscourt Green” campaign, standing firm when speculators threatened our green. Bill's interests were myriad. He always flew the appropriate flag from his top window when Cork, Munster or Ireland were competing, reminding us of who we are in a lovely way. If ever you needed sound advice, Bill was the man you turned to for a steady word and a good plan. Great company over a nice drink, he appreciated the craic that went with it. Now reunited with his beloved Rose Mary and all who have gone before him, Bill will be sadly missed by
us who were privileged to call him neighbour and friend. To Laura, Steve, Bruce and the entire Egar family, thank you for sharing Bill with us. Leaba i measc na Naomh go raibh aige.
