On both my own behalf and on behalf of all my colleagues in St. John Ambulance Ireland, I wish to offer my sincerest condolences to Daphne and all the Fleming family on Bill's passing. Bill was a very committed member of SJAI through his membership of our Council before assuming the Presidency and then being our first Board Chairman when, with his strong support, our charity became a CLG. Bill was a source of wise counsel, especially to me when I became Commissioner, and he strongly supported our volunteers in our work. We were saddened when illness robbed Bill, and you all, of his strength in recent years, but we remember his good humour, commitment and great story-telling so fondly, and not the illness that struck him later in life. Rest In Peace, Dear Bill, after a life so well-lived.

Bill was so kind to me when first I joined Carrickmines Golf Club. It is something I will never forget. He would always greet you as though you were the most important person in the world. You always felt at ease if you were lucky enough to be in his company. To Igor and family please accept my heartfelt sympathy. There won't be another Bill.

I am very saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. He was an essential part of our College of Music ‘piano and guitar’ ensemble, whose friendship continued with numerous happy reunions in the National Concert Hall. I shall always treasure the warmth of his courtliness and kindness to everyone.

I recognised Bill at an early stage as a thorough gentleman and a good sort and sport! I was delighted to nominate him to the committee at Carrickmines Golf Club (and thus future Captain) - a role which he carried out with his usual enthusiasm and polish. While he has been unwell for some time he continued to be mentioned with affection throughout his illness and his good humour and bonhomie will be badly missed. My sincere sympathy to his wife and family and may he rest in peace.

Before and after Bill became our much loved Captain of The Carrickmines Golf Club ,we played together many times. We cemented our special friendship one Saturday on the 4th tee when we discovered our mutual history as former mariners serving as engineering and radio officers respectively in the merchant navy. It was always ' Admiral ' or at least ' Sir ' whenever we met afterwards .Enjoying the magnificent views over Killiney Bay from the drawingroom of the beautiful home he shared with Daphne and family, Bill of course was the Admiral.
