William (Billy) McCarthy

Billy was a great comrade of my father. He was a straight talking, hard working activist who strived to improve the conditions of the working class people of Waterford. He had an independence of mind, a dry sense of humour and great compassion for the circumstances of others. He lived a principled and purposeful life and was liked and admired by many.

I knew Billy in the late 1970s in the party. An excellent comrade. May he rest in peace.

Saddened by the news of Billy's death. He was always a true socialist and a republican but, more than this, one of Waterford's true gentlemen. Rest easy, old friend.

It was through his involvement with the Workers Party that I first met Billy in the late 1980s. Back then and on the various occasions I have met Billy in the decades since, I was struck by his conviviality in conversation.
