Dear Leonie and family, it’s with great sadness that I learned of Liam’s passing.

I had the pleasure of sailing with Liam on the Howth 17s alongside Brendan Cassidy for a number of seasons, and I always enjoyed his company. Once we got the boat out into the Sound and the sails filled with wind, Liam’s stories would begin – always engaging, always entertaining and quite often ending abruptly with a shout of “Ready about!” from Brendan who was keen to keep us focused on the task of sailing the boat rather than chatting away!

And to this day, I can still picture him back in the comfort of the clubhouse in his woolly jumper, taking his first sip of Guinness and launching into one of his stories. The words, “thank you Daddy for saying thank you to Rachel”, come to mind. I’m quite sure he told me that story again the last time I met him…

I hadn’t seen Liam in some time, but I had the chance to catch up with him again when I bumped into him a few years ago in Howth Yacht Club. As ever, he was warm, friendly, and generous with his time.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

I was Liam’s apprentice from 1990 to 1993, and although I left the law to work in media immediately after my apprenticeship, the training I received from Liam has benefited me both personally and professionally ever since.
Liam was a larger-than-life character, full of stories, knowledge, and wisdom about both the law and life.
He was deeply serious about his work and meticulous in all he did, but he also had great style, humour, and a genuine religious faith.
I am grateful to have had him as my master, and I can’t imagine having had a better or funnier one.

To the Young family, please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. I was deeply saddened to learn of Liam’s passing. Liam was an exceptional lawyer and mentor with whom I apprenticed in the 1980s. I am grateful for the wisdom, guidance and support he shared with me during my apprenticeship. Lessons learnt then have helped me ever since. I remember Liam also as a man of great integrity and kindness. I spent much of the very first day of my apprenticeship with Liam quaffing champagne in the Clarence Hotel following a Supreme Court decision that morning where Liam had successfully reversed a High Court decision concerning the transfer of risk in a consignment of paper in a warehouse fire. ‘So this is what a solicitor does? Hmmm. Not bad!’, I thought. The point of course is that Liam brought me with him – and what an apprenticeship it was. He gave over-generously to my education and was a member of the Law Society Education Committee, as well as the conveyancing committee. He believed in giving back, and was a man of granite integrity who loved the law, and knew it. I have always been so proud of my connection which continued throughout my career, resuming especially when his firm merged with mine in 2010 – a game changer in those days of recession. He will no doubt now annoy the angels with those old saws that he regaled us with… ‘the burdens on the folio’ (other people's children), ‘the scars all down my back’ (lost causes), ‘the fall of the warrior is the pram in the hallway’ (himself!) – ah! The stories!
