Daniel Aherne

Daniel was born in Timoleague, County Cork on August 16, 1936. The youngest of seven siblings, he played for Kilbrittain Hurling Club before emigrating to New York in 1963. He worked as a concrete laborer for over 30 years before joining the maintenance staff of P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village, where there is a bench dedicated in his honor. He was proud to be a Corkman and a lifelong member of the Pioneer Club. A man of great faith, he loved to walk, ride his bicycle, watch football and golf, and spend time with his family at home in Maspeth, and in Saugerties, NY. 

He is survived by Bridget, his beloved wife of fifty-one years; his four children, Sheila Bluni and her husband Tom; Fr. John Aherne, OFM; Brian Aherne and his wife Kathryn; Mary Lynch and her husband Joe; his eight grandchildren Autumn, Tara, Gavin, Daniel, Saoirse, Brendan, Dylan and James. He is also survived by his sister Margaret and many nieces and nephews in the United States and in Ireland.

Funeral Mass took place Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 10 AM, Transfiguration Church, 64-14 Clinton Avenue, Maspeth, NY 11378
