Dermot Byrne passed away at Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Calgary, Alberta, Canada on March 27, 2026. Born in Dublin, Ireland on January 21, 1951, Dermot was a storyteller, a dreamer, and a larger-than-life character. The book he was forever writing was titled The Random Thoughts of the Average House Painter. He was not average, of course – and he knew that.

There are so many people who loved him, whose lives he changed over a cup of tea and a story, or an act of kindness. He is deeply missed by his wife Mary; his children and their spouses Siobhan (Josh) and Colin (Sinéad); his grandchildren, Ronan, Bronwen, Oscar and Teddy; his sister Irene (Martin), and brother-in-law Jimmy. He was predeceased by his twin sister, Jean.

This summer, Dermot’s family will travel home to Ireland with him to celebrate his life with the rest of his family and friends at his favorite childhood haunts.
