On Monday, December 6, 2021, Dr. C. Jules Rominger passed away at the age of 96. He was the loving husband of Martina (Marty) and the son of Jules and Marcella Rominger. He was born and raised in Philadelphia. Jules was a graduate of West Catholic High School, LaSalle College, and Jefferson Medical School (1948). He did his residency at what is now the Fox Chase Cancer Center. He was a devout Catholic. Dr. Rominger served the people of West Philadelphia in the field of Radiation Oncology for over 60 years. He was on the staff at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital and Misericordia Hospital and was instrumental in the development of their radiation oncology programs.
He was renowned in his field, authoring many scientific papers and contributing to various books, articles, and journals. He further demonstrated his commitment to his profession by assuming a leadership role in numerous medical organizations. He was honored to serve as the President of the American Cancer Society-Philadelphia chapter. During his career, he also was the medical director of the Medical Center’s Hospice Program. He firmly believed that in addition to addressing a patient’s medical condition, it was critical to address their emotional needs. Dr. Rominger’s patients will best remember him for his sincere and caring bedside manner.
The Gwynedd Mercy College Radiation Therapy Program was founded by Dr. Rominger. This program provides training for radiation therapy technicians, who play an essential role in providing radiation oncology services to cancer patients. He also established a scholarship for students enrolling in the allied health programs at Gwynedd Mercy College. Furthermore, he established a foundation that endows a lecture series dealing with ethical issues emerging from advances in biology, medicine, and technologies.
Jules was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army as a medical doctor at Fort Lewis in Olympia, Washington. Gardening, fishing, traveling and especially spending time with his family were his passions outside of his profession. He was also an avid reader. His favorite place was his beloved “holiday” home on the Emerald Isle. Lasting memories and lifelong friends were made with “Herself” at their Little White House on Toe Head, Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland over a period of three- decades.
In addition to his wife of seventy-three years, Jules is survived by four children: Marcella Kubovsak, Robert (Eileen), Martina Galli (Jeff) and David (Cindy). His oldest son, John preceded him in death, and is survived by his spouse, Maryhelen. Surviving also are sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. His loving, quiet and reassuring way will be sadly missed by all but especially by those that knew him as “Dad”, “Sully” or “Grandad”.
Relatives and friends are invited on Friday, December 10th. Visitation from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 AM with Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the Villanova University Campus, 800 Lancaster Ave., Villanova PA. Masks are required at the Church. Interment will be private.
