Dr. Zillur Rahman
Rathfarnham, Dublin / Sardah, Rajshahi, Bangladesh
Zillur passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, March 6, 2026, at St James’s Hospital, Dublin, surrounded by his loving family. Nothing meant more to Zil than family and he will be dearly missed by his devoted children, Tarik, Shauna and Rohana; and his beloved sisters Shireen, Kohinoor and brother, Saifullah. He was especially close to his brothers-in-law Peter, Tom, Eamon and Michael. Zil was a proud grandfather to Azalea, Raiya, Thea, Arran and Joshua and was the treasured father-in-law of Victoria, Declan and Michael. He was very close to his extended family in Ireland, Bangladesh and around the world, who are deeply saddened by his loss.
Originally from Sardah, Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Zil forged an outstanding academic career when he came to Ireland in 1969 and created a loving family home in Rathfarnham with his wife Anne.
Zil was kind, humble and generous, with a fantastic sense of humour. He loved meeting people, an inquisitive thinker, he had a natural curiosity for learning about all things in life. He was fluent in several languages, an expert in the sciences, an excellent chef and a passionate gardener. He loved sport both as a player and spectator, was a skilful golfer and an award-winning bridge-player.
His courage and adventurous spirit took him to working in Lahore, Pakistan, obtaining a PhD at Louvain, Belgium and thereafter, excelling as a Senior Lecturer of Physics at the Dublin Institute of Technology.
An honoured Bangladeshi-Irishman, Zil championed Ireland and its rich heritage to all his global friends and family.
Zil was a pillar of the Bangladeshi community in Ireland and was respected for his long-standing commitment to volunteering at the Dublin Mosque. His legacy will live on through the strong foundation that he built.
His family take comfort in knowing that he will reunite with his adored wife Anne whose recent loss was profoundly felt by Zil. He will also join his brother Zia, mother Roufun Nesa, father Marfat Ali, mother-in-law Ita, her sister, Maureen, brother-in-law Paddy and nephew Eoin.
