O’Kane, Fergus John 2nd October 1971 – 9th December 2024.
It is with profound sadness that the family and friends of Fergus John O’Kane announce his peaceful passing in Charlotte, North Carolina USA on Monday, December 9th, 2024, at the age of 53 years after a brief but hard-fought battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive, incurable form of brain cancer.
Fergus was born on 2nd October 1971, to parents Margaret (Anne) and Terence (Terry) who built their home and full life in Baslicon, Waterville, County Kerry, Ireland. From an early age, hospitality was an integral part of his life, working alongside his parents and siblings in Waterville. The rugged southwest coast of Ireland he called ‘the most beautiful place in the world’. It sparked a wanderlust that punctuated his adventurous spirit, inquisitive nature and genuine interest in others. He visited several countries and places, always finding meaningful opportunities. Golf was a great interest. Fergus combined that with his high level of excellence in service, working at The Masters tournament 2015 and Quail Hollow Club, including PGA events. These too reminded him of home, specifically Waterville Golf Club. His working life, friendships and social connections were very much intertwined. Fergus leaves an indelible mark within the service industry in Charlotte, NC where he is lauded for his mentorship and unwavering commitment to high standards. Fergus is survived by his daughter, Moya; sister, Bernadette; brothers, Terence and Des; niece Aisling; nephews, Brian and Darragh; cousins; many, many great friends, stellar colleagues and Irish community. He was preceded in death by his father Terry O’Kane and his mother Anne [nee Moriarty]. Fergus in his 53 years on this earth, weaved a tapestry of friendships, stories and experiences that will forever be cherished and remembered by all who know and love him, and also those who had the privilege of meeting him even just once.
At Fergus’ request, a memorial gathering to celebrate his friendships and memory will be held in the Spring in Charlotte, NC. This will be followed by Fergus’ return home to Waterville, Ireland where he’ll forever rest with his parents. Family and friends - local and aboard - will gather in remembrance and homecoming.
