Gary (Gerald Joseph) Murphy of Ardrah, Bantry, Co. Cork, passed away on 18 January 2024. Born in Cork City on 22 March 1959, Gary was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, teacher, traveller, and footballer. He lived no ordinary life, leaving Ireland in 1985 to teach in Sudan, Brunei, Hong Kong, Oman, and Qatar. He was deeply loved and will forever be remembered by his wife Martha, children Vanessa, Yasmin and Darragh, grandson Cillian, his siblings Valerie, Stephanie, Jill and Paul, his sons-in-law Pierrick and Stephen, and his many friends and extended family both near and far.
Predeceased by his parents Alice and Jim Murphy, Gary’s funeral service was held at 10am on Wednesday, 24 January, at St Finbarr’s Roman Catholic Church, Cork South. He was buried in St Finbarr’s Cemetery, where he now lies at rest with his father Jim, grandfather Cornelius, and grandmother Josephine.

Concern's work reflects the spirit of Gary's time teaching children in Sudan in 1985-1989, and his many charitable endeavours since then. Most recently, he was proud of his work with Community College Qatar to partner and support a secondary school in the village of Makunduchi, Zanzibar.
