Sean (John) King, late of Toronto and formerly of Limerick, died peacefully on 18 January 2026, aged 81. Born in Limerick Ireland, he later lived in London, England before emigrating to Canada where he raised his family and became deeply involved in sport, music, education and community life.
He worked for many years in the mining industry in Northern Ontario, including mine rescue, before returning to education and completing a Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Toronto. He went on to work with children and families through public service and private practice and also served as a School Board Trustee and Vice-Chairperson, reflecting his strong commitment to education and community life.
A talented athlete and lifelong lover of sport, he was an amateur boxer, he founded and coached local soccer clubs and remained passionate about fitness throughout his life. He was also a self-taught musician who loved traditional Irish music and formed the band Big Fog, enjoying many years of performing and bringing people together through song.
Known for his humour, big personality, and gift for conversation, he believed strongly in lifelong learning and in helping people reach their full potential. He was someone who left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
He is survived by his five children: Jackie, Lisa (Mark), Darran (Jessica), Erin and Sean (Angela); his grandchildren Caitlin, (Nic), Jordan (Sarah), Sydney, Kiera, Calvin, Holden, Madison, Ashlynn and Aidan; and his great-granddaughter Isla.
A private cremation has taken place in Toronto. A memorial Mass and family gathering will take place in Limerick Ireland on 10 April 2026.
