In loving memory of Joyce M. O’Sullivan (neé Murphy)
On March 7, Joyce left this world peacefully, surrounded and held by her family. Born in Dublin on April 12, 1934, she was the oldest child of Peter and Sheila Murphy, and was predeceased by her younger brother, Kenneth Murphy, in September 2020.
She attended Sacred Heart Leeson Street, where she made many lifelong friends. Joyce started working at the Shelbourne Hotel at the age of sixteen, and was always quick to regale you with stories of her time spent with the many wonderful Shelbourne colleagues who took exceptional care of her, the local characters she encountered and the Hollywood movie stars she crossed paths with. Later she worked at Scott Tallon Walker Architects, another charmed experience which she remembered fondly.
An adventurous spirit led her to travel to the U.S. by boat in 1963; an intended short stay turned into more than a decade in Boston, Mass. In 1964, she married Martin O’Sullivan of Cornamona, Co. Galway (deceased), and they had four children. A desire to return home to Ireland came true in 1978, settling in Leopardstown, Co. Dublin.
Travel was her great hobby, embodying all of the elements that brought her joy. Ready to go at the drop of a hat, Joyce possessed a childlike wonder when she traveled. Undaunted by solo travel, she was always ready to join a group or persuade a friend to embark on an adventure, and many of her happiest days were those where she connected with new people and places. Amongst her favorite journeys were pilgrimages to Medjugorje, a birthday trip to Istanbul, multiple visits to Italy and summers at the Merriman School in County Clare.
Joyce lived a life rich in love, close family, amazing friendships, travel and new experiences. She adored a good meal with lively conversation and a glass of wine in hand – preferring to be served rather than to serve – and always had much to chat about. Dessert was often her favorite course at any meal, and ice cream did not generally make it to the “sharing” stage. Possessing a vivacious, energetic zest for life, she loved to dance and her wonderful laugh will forever be remembered and celebrated.
Predeceased by her cherished son, Martin, we envision a joyful reunion.
Joyce will forever be remembered by those who loved her most, her daughters Sheila & Adrienne, her son Garrett, her beloved grandchildren Dylan, Julia, Olivia, Nico and Ciara and her son-in-law, Brian Moore.
