Margaret Flaherty Gavin was born October 13 1954 on the beautiful South Connemara island of Lettermore, County Galway. She was one of 9 children born to proud hardworking parents Coil Pheadiar and Nora (nee Flaherty). At the age of 16 she emigrated to Norwood Massachusetts, where her father Coil and her sister Maureen were living. Margaret worked and enjoyed years in Boston immersing herself in the Irish community.
In Boston Margaret met William Gavin a fellow Connemara native, they began their romance that resulted in a life long marriage, moving to the Bronx and having 3 beautiful daughters together. She spent her years living in the Irish communities of the Bronx and Yonkers New York. Dedicating her life to raising her girls and opening her door to the many neighborhood children who enjoyed her cupcakes and kindness.
Margaret was an understanding and patient woman. She enjoyed the simple things in life, was generous, thoughtful and kind. Margaret never forgot a birthday, Christmas, or anyone she loved. She was a doting grandmother to Mairead, Christina, Ashleagh, Jack and Vincent. Margaret was so proud of her grandkids, they brought her immeasurable joy. Never one to panic, she sailed through life like a true islander. Margaret, a good listener, was always on hand to lend her ear to anyone who needed it. She never cast judgement and always rooted for the underdog.
Margaret will be forever missed by her heartbroken husband Willie and their 3 daughters Sinead, Deirdre and Noreen. The grandkids Margaret adored will remember her kind spirit and youthful heart. She will be sorely missed by the Flaherty and Gavin families and the many friends she made along the way.
