Martin O’Sullivan - In Memoriam

Martin O’Sullivan, cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, gone too soon, passed away suddenly on February 4th, 2024 in Lake Worth, Florida, at just 57 years of age. Born in Boston to the late Martin O’Sullivan Sr. and Joyce O’Sullivan (née Murphy), Martin grew up first in Milton, Massachusetts and then in Dublin, Ireland.

You always knew when Martin entered a room. He had a legendary appetite for a good time and mischief in whatever setting, never missing the chance to tell one of his innumerable stories filled with irreverence, comedy, and great craic. While he may have defined the phrase “able to talk the hind legs off a donkey,” what he really looked for was an engaged conversation without filters. Above all, he was an incredibly loyal and caring friend.

Martin returned to Boston in the late 80’s and would continue to travel for the rest of his life, scuba diving in Thailand, eating and drinking in the piazzas of Sicily, fishing on his favorite lakes in County Sligo, and racing motorbikes in Spain, to name only a few. Through it all, he always found his way back to the bars and pubs of Boston and Dublin.

He was a punk and an early follower of U2 (he attended an untold number of shows over the years) and The Smiths, and his love of music took him to front rows and backstages around the world. Music defined him, and he shared that love with everyone he knew, especially his nieces and nephews. Whether it was a concert recommendation or a new album to soundtrack his high speed driving, he reveled in sharing his life stories with them, and was always imparting recently acquired tidbits of knowledge that might come in handy. Martin was high energy with them, whether they were 2 years old or 22, and amidst his rowdy play acting, it was sometimes challenging to know who the youngest person in the room was. He remained forever a child at heart.

He spent much of the last few years in Lake Worth, Florida, and quickly became a fixture in the area, though wherever life took him, he was at home wherever there was good music, good chat, and good wine. Martin leaves an indelible mark on the many lives he touched with his loyalty, humor,
love, and zest for life.

Martin is survived by his mother, Joyce, his loving sisters, Sheila and Adrienne, his brother Garrett, brother-in-law Brian Moore, his Spanish in-laws, and his much loved nieces and nephews, Dylan, Julia, Olivia, Nico, and Ciara. He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends, and his innumerable acquaintances in Boston; Lake Worth; Castlebaldwin, County Sligo; Dublin and around the world.

In the words of the man himself – we’ll talk to you mañana.
