Michael Francis Harrington, 83, Kilcatherine, Eyeries, Beara, Co. Cork, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 leaving behind a life defined by craftmanship, hard work and generosity. Born and raised in rural Cork, Michael grew up alongside his beloved siblings Pat, Margaret, Helen, Mary, and his late brothers John and Gerald.
In the early 1960s, Michael immigrated to the United States, where he worked as an ironworker on Manhattan’s rising skyline, including the World Trade Center—work he took great pride in. In 1984, he founded his own successful construction company, which he ran through the late 1990s with integrity and expertise in finishing carpentry.
In 1970, Michael married Winifred McDonaugh, the love of his life. Together they raised five children—Andrew (deceased), Audrey, Michael Dennis, Troy and Cliff, and he leaves behind two beautiful grandchildren James and Liam. Michael and Winifred shared a special joy in attending céilí dances and set dancing, often going several times a week with friends. These evenings were filled with music, movement and connection, and they became some of the most treasured memories of their life together. Even after Winnifred’s passing in 2011, Michael carried her memory with him in every step he took.
Michael was a kid at heart. He played competitive ice/roller hockey along with skiing and thoroughly enjoyed having all his children play with him weekly. Michael was a man of many passions, particularly outdoor activities in Ireland. His favorite interests included hunting with his dogs, fishing, gardening, walking, and tracking the weather, sunrises, and sunsets. He was admired for his quick wit, fun‑loving spirit, and his generosity, often giving his time to anyone who needed a hand and evenenjoyed giving away lobsters and mackerels.
Michael’s life was full, meaningful, and deeply rooted in the things that mattered most to him. He leaves behind a family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He is reunited now with his beloved Winifred, their son Andrew, his brother John and Gerald, and his spirit lives on in all who knew him.
