The death has occurred of

Phyllis Furness

Oughterard, Galway

When I wake up in the morning, I look up to the skies

Is it going to rain, or will the sun get in my eyes?

If it rains, there is knitting I can do

nativity sets, Dickensian mice or maybe a doll or two.

But if the sun decides to shine what pleasure will there be!

I can sit and warm my ancient bones beneath my tall lime tree!

And while I’m there give thanks to God for what he has given me.

A short poem written by Phyllis

With heavy hearts and tremendous love, we say farewell to a much-loved lady. When the sun set on Monday, 12 August 2024 Phyllis, who was born 109 years ago, slipped away peacefully in the warmth and comfort of her bed at Moycullen Nursing Home. A mother of the late Michael, a devoted Nan to Jackie, a treasured grandmother to Helen, a proud great-grandmother to Toby, Lachie, and Chloe and a cherished aunty of Rob and Pat.

Phyllis's extraordinary life, filled with wisdom, kindness, and resilience, touched the hearts of all who knew her. A lady who lived each day with gratitude. With extraordinary knowledge and experience, and having read the Bible twice, she was an inspiration to many and her gentle nature was a comfort to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.

Her remains will be received and welcomed by the community and congregation at Kilcummin Parish Church, Oughterard on Tuesday, 20 August at 7 p.m. A Funeral Service to celebrate her life will commence therein at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, 21 August followed by a private cremation.

Please remember to wear a colourful hat in remembrance of her love of colour and life and instead of bringing flowers to the funeral please consider donating to Madra a charity close to her heart.

'Remember to always be “kind and compassionate with one another"

Rest in peace, Phyllis
