Sr Deirdre Byrne

Byrne, Sr Deirdre died peacefully in her 86th year on the 19th August 2024, at the Mercy Care Centre, Derby in the wonderful care of the staff, her carers and her Mercy Sisters. Late of Derby and formerly of Mourne Road, Drimnagh Dublin, Guernsey, and Doncaster UK. Sr Deirdre is the last of her siblings and is predeceased by her parents Thomas and Mary Ellen her sisters, Noeleen, Kathleen, Irene, Alice Maureen and her brothers Matt and Dessie.

She will be sadly and lovingly missed by her many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces, her sister-in-law Chrissie, her Mercy Sisters, care home residents, extended family and friends at home and abroad.

She joined the Order at 18yrs, went onto become a teacher and head mistress at the esteemed Blanchelande College on the Channel Island of Guernsey. She spent many years there and is remembered as one of the last of the Blanchelande Sisters to have worked there. She will be fondly remembered by past students and colleagues. She then moved to England where she dedicated herself to community service and caring for elderly nuns.

Removal to St Philomena’s Convent Chapel at 312 Highfields Park Dr, Darley Abbey Derby DE22 1JX at 5pm on Monday, the 16th September, and mass on the 17th September at 11.15am followed by burial at Nottingham Rd Cemetery Derby.
