Sr. Mary Pius Butler OSA

Sister Mary Pius OSA (Ordo Sancti Augustini) Julia Raphael (Ray) Butler.

 

Formerly Carrabawn, Aughrim, Ballinasloe. Co. Galway. Born 24th October 1932 - Died 13th February 2026.

 

Sr. Pius passed away peacefully in the care of the Augustinian Sisters & Community at St. Clare’s Care Home, St. George’s Park, Ditchling Common, Burgess Hill, Sussex, United Kingdom.

 

Predeceased by her parents Michael Joseph Butler (1970) and Julia (nee Clarke) (1946), her sister Mary Frances (2001) and her brothers James Joseph (1931), Michael Anthony (1998) and John Paul (2019).

 

Sr. Pius will be sadly missed by her niece Deirdre and husband John, her nephew John Paul Jnr. and his wife Elaine, her grandnieces, grandnephew, Sr. Thomas and all the members of the Augustinian Community, relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends both in Ireland and the UK.

Sr. Pius will repose in Grenham's Funeral Home, Ballinasloe (H53 HK15), on Tuesday, the 24th of March, from 6pm to 7pm, with removal afterwards to St. Augustine's Church, Clontuskert (H53 C623). Sr. Pius' Requiem Mass will take place on Wednesday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery.

Ray joined the Augustinian Community at St George’s Retreat on 8th September 1954. She took her final profession in 1959. She devoted her life to the sick, elderly and vulnerable members of society at various locations across the UK including Edinburgh, Devon, Danehill and Archbishops House, Westminster before returning to spend her final years with her lifelong colleagues of the Augustinian Community at the Convent in St. George’s Retreat.
