It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our father, Thomas Fahey (Fahy) on August 2, 2025 at the great age of 95.
Tom was the son of the late John and Mary Fahy of Doonane, Co. Galway, Ireland.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Josephine Fahey, (nee Burke), his mother and father, and his seven brothers and two sisters.
Tom was the father of devoted children Francis Fahey and his wife Doreen, Patricia Fitzgerald and her husband John. Tom was a proud and deeply loved grandfather to Kelly, Matthew, Fiona and Tommy, who brought him great joy and pride in his later years. Sadly missed by his sister-in-law Peggy Fahy, Josephine's extended family, nieces, nephew, extended families, neighbours, and friends.
Tom entered eternal rest peacefully at his home in Bradenton, FL where he spent the last few years of his life, surrounded by loving family. Although his actual birthdate has been a source of contention, there was no confusion about the special connection Tom had with his place of birth in the village of Doonane, County Galway, Ireland, a place that he loved and would continually return to throughout his life. With his God given craftsmanship, at age 30, he completed the family farmhouse that still sits on that homestead today. Emigrating to America as a young man, he used his construction skills to obtain work as a building inspector in New York City. It was there that he met and ultimately married a fiery redhead Josie Burke, who loved to laugh and dance. Together, they raised their two children, Frank and Patricia who grew up in a loving household in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx, New York. Tom ultimately started his own construction company, reveling in renovation work and earning a stellar reputation throughout the New York metropolitan area. Through word of mouth, customers knew that his encyclopedic knowledge and skills in plastering, carpentry and plumbing, were only matched by an amazing work ethic. No project was ever finished “good enough” but was treated as a labor of love. After a long workday, Tom’s other passion was a voracious reading habit. He could be found on Saturday night in his recliner, reading the New York Times from one end to the other.
Tom was a wonderful family man, who lived his life guided by the importance of remaining in touch with one’s roots and the values of integrity and reputation. Although he will be deeply missed, there is joy in celebrating a truly “good life”- having made a profound difference in so many of our lives.
We invite you to a celebration of his life where Thomas will repose at St. Mary's Church, Skehana, Co. Galway on Sunday evening, August 17th from 5pm to 6:30pm. Funeral Mass will take place the following morning, Monday August 18th at 11:30am. Burial afterwards in Doonane Cemetery. Funeral Mass will be live-streamed on https://churchtv.ie/menlough/skehana.
