Thomas Patrick Smyth, 78, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024, at his home in Stamford, CT. Called Tomás by those who knew and loved him, he was born in Drumkilly, Kilnaneck, County Cavan, Ireland on March 15, 1946, to parents Thomas and Margaret (née Gaffney) Smyth. The second of nine children, Tomás came to the US in 1969 on a trip with his Crosserlough football team and would call New York his home for the next 55 years. It was in New York where Tomás met the love of his life, Eileen (née Hanrahan) of County Kerry. They married in 1974 in the Bronx, NY, and had four children.
Known for his fierce sense of humor, quick wit, and intelligence, Tomás was an avid reader and lover of all things history. A great man for music from Irish to country to reggae and everything in between, he could always be relied upon for bringing music and fun to the party. An athlete in his younger years, Tomás was a passionate fan of all sports, especially the GAA, the NY Mets, and the NY Jets, and a fervent supporter of his black & yellow hometown club Crosserlough.
Tomás was kind to everyone he met, making friends his whole life from all corners of the world. He was a lover of animals, travel, politics, and geography, and one of the finest Jeopardy players this side of the country. He will be remembered for his gift of storytelling, his lyrical voice, his genuine heart, and how he brightened any room he entered. A proud Irishman, Tomás will be hugely missed by all those who had the great privilege of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas & Margaret, his two brothers Des and Gerard, and his sister Ursula. He is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 50 years, his four children, Sinead, Thomas, Aisling (Goff), and Ciara (Bisceglia), son-in-laws Patrick Goff and Peter Bisceglia; nine adoring grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pops,” Aidan, Lucas, Robert, Patrick, Margot, Thomas, Peter, Shiloh, and Martin “DeeDee;” his three sisters Rosaleen (Waters), Margaret, and Carmel, his two brothers Philip and Colm, many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family here and in Ireland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Bronx on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 10:45 am.
