Inscriptions

The addition of extra inscriptions on existing memorials is done on site at the cemetery. This skill is very specialised as new inscriptions have to replicate the original font and style of lettering.

Some new inscriptions are still cut out by using the old hand-cut system. We at Hickeys are one of the few remaining firms in Ireland who continue to use this method.

Renovations

The cleaning of existing memorials and restoring them to their original standard is a very important facet of stonecutting. We at Hickeys only use polishing discs (of various grades) and brushes to renovate memorials.

We do not use or recommend sandblasting to clean stone as this makes the stone porous and more susceptible to gathering lichen. Sandblasting also distorts the finer detail of carving and lettering on memorials.
