Deepest sympathy to Alan’s family and friends. Alan was a fantastic lecturer and made a lasting impression on his students on the Diploma in Heritage and Folklore Studies. A few years ago, Alan kindly stepped in at the last minute when another lecturer was unavailable to take a fieldtrip with the students, whenever I meet the students on that trip they always mention it and how much they enjoyed Alan's tour of Cork City.
May Alan rest in peace.

I have many fond memories of Alan from his and Sarah’s time in Australia. A particular highlight was a 30 minute, Guinness fueled joint tirade about the famous “Hand of Back” incident in Munsters Heineken Cup loss in 2002. Neither of us believing Neil Back should be allowed back on Irish soil again.

My favourite Alan memory has to be at our wedding party in Balingaddy when Alan arrived slightly shaky from the previous nights shenanigans. He plonked down on a barstool at a makeshift bar and proceed to entertain the wider Clery family as they came and went for pints throughout the day.

A true gentle and scholar of all things history and sport. You’ll be sadly missed mate but you’ll never stand alone.
— Podge and Sachi

The second memory was something I reminded Malte of after we had a weepy hug after the Mass. Late on the night of Maria and Shane’s wedding, during the part where you Irish folk love a good sing song, we had a chance to properly catch up with Alan about life back in Ireland after Australia. He said something like “This, the songs and family and the craic, this is what it’s all about for me, I could never have stayed, this is home”.

God bless you Alan - we’ll never forget you. [Part 2]
— Lucy and Malte Zimdahl
Sarah, the Ryan family and the McCarthy family - we are so sorry for your loss.

It was truly a joy to meet and spend time with Alan (and Sarah) in Sydney. It is so hard to think of Alan moving on as he was the definition of fun, he brought such energy to every interaction, even just a night in the pub was approached like Christmas Day.

Alan's Mass encapsulated two very bittersweet memories we have of Alan (from Maria and Shane's wedding).

The first was the day after, when Sarah and Alan drove us from the venue back to Bulgaden and Alan insisted on a detour to Applegreen, not for petrol but to experience our first Supermacs. Alan also made the route to Bulgaden a bit longer than was advisable for four passengers with severe hangovers by giving us a very comical and detailed tour of Bulgaden and its surrounds, including the location of Maria and Shane's first 'shift' and making Sarah slow down the car so we could properly appreciate Granny Tobin's house (and explaining you could tell she was not home precisely because the door was shut). The memory regularly cracked us both up and even before hearing of Alan's sad diagnosis we were often telling people about this epic car trip with the local historian. It all feels very poignant now and something of a privilege to have been shown around town by the very best in the business! [Part 1]

While I was devastated to hear the news of Alan's passing, I couldn't help but smile at some of the great memories of the time we got to share with Alan during his time in Sydney with Sarah and the gang.

Alan was one of those people who walk into a room and instantly bring it to life. He had a gift for turning any night out with him into an adventure and we were all lucky to be along for the ride. His legendary (and sometimes questionable) dance moves that got everyone on their feet will be a cherished memory and the way he always knew how to keep the fun going, he made every moment unforgettable.

I can't express how sorry I am to Sarah, his family and extended in-laws and friends for your loss. He truly was a one of a kind gentleman.
— Mairead Finn
We will miss Alan's fun, sincere and warm character, along with his fantastic smile. For the times we spent with Alan in Oz, he left an imprint on all of us as his unique character, talent for telling a story and light heartedness will always be remembered and appreciated. Our hearts go out to Sarah, Alan's parents and siblings. We send our sincere condolences to the McCarthy and Ryan families. You are in our thoughts. Roz and Martine

Alan and I shared many happy days in Clonakilty. I still meet people who, all these years later, remember sharing even a single drink, a single conversation with him.
