Deepest condolences to all of Al’s family on his very sad passing. I knew Al since the early 70s in the ESB when we were both local Union reps, AUEW/TASS in Al’s case and for me ATGWU. Al was was successful in securing a key upgrading for technical grades in the mid 70s which to complete shock on the management side, then followed on to all the technical grades for all the Unions, just as Al expected. I often met him later when we were both on EPSU business in Europe where he was a very effective operator on the Union side. May Al rest in peace.
Deepest condolences to June and all the family. Al was a beautiful human being. An absolutely brilliant man. May he rest in peace.

Condolences to Al's family, friends and Union colleagues. Al really was larger than life as an advocate and as a mentor to us in the IMPACT IoT Voc Group. Though a long tíme ago his presence and craic stays with us. We still laugh at his recounting of cowboy movie plots and the Western Way.... RIP Al.

My deepest condolences to June and family on the loss of Al. He was a force of nature and carried his superb intellect lightly. A fantastic sense of humor and when Al delivered his opinion at a meeting it usually settled matters. A huge loss to our Association. RIP Al.

My thoughts and sympathies with the family, friends, and ex-coworkers with the sad passing of Al.

He contributed greatly to the development of the work of EPSU the European Federation of Public Service unions. AL was a member of our local government group, vice-president and President until retirement. He led EPSU delegations in the negotiations with European employers.

He was great fun to be with and very down to earth. Was nice to work together. Al will be missed..
Very sorry to hear this sad news of Al’s death. We were both brought up on the Guinness housing estate in Kimmage and had many (hair-raising) adventures there, in the Dublin mountains and on the rugby field.
May he rest in peace.
The late Al Butler was one of the very effective team of full-time officials in Gardiner Place when I was an active member of LGPSU/IMPACT.

In Dublin County Council and latterly Dún Laoghaire Rathdown, I did my bit for "the cause". Our Branch had less dealings with the late Al than others. But he was a formidable presence at Annual Conference; both as an official and as a racentour!

Reading the names of those who posted condolences, brings me right back to when I was probably less cynical than I am now.

Betimes, we may need reminding that the working conditions in local authorities and health services were hard enough won. And, indeed, betimes, local activists did not always see eye to eye on certain occasions. But that is healthy.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Al Butler.

May he rest easy.

Larry Dunne.

Condolences to Al’s extended family. A great mentor to all new union staff. Great memories when he was in full flow in Dergvale. RIP Al.
On the other side of the world, I'm deeply saddened to learn of Al's sudden departure. We were boyhood neighbours and playmates, went through Clogher Rd Tech together, and were close companions during our long apprenticeship years in Guinness' Brewery. Al was a great character, fun to be around, and very supportive, especially when we were battling in the scrum together during our rugby days. My sincere condolences to his family.
Sincere sympathy to the Butler family on the loss of Al. I have many memories of going to IT Vocational Group meetings with him over the years. May he rest in peace.
The LGPSU and IMPACT were very fortunate to have Al as one its officials for over a quarter of a century. He brought a rich tapestry of experiences, energy, skill and wisdom to the many roles he filled. His personality was infectious, his wit legendary. Al possessed a wide repertoire of perspectives that always brought laughter when he shared his stories and experiences. No one captivated an audience like Al when he was in full flow.
June, Stephen, Brendan and Alison and the entire Butler family and Al's legion of friends, sincerest condolences, as you grieve the loss of a wonderful human being. We can only share in your sadness and cherish the many happy memories of those fortunate enough to have known Al as a colleague and friend .
Rest in Peace.
Sorry to hear of the passing of "Uncle Al" or as my father Eric, Dinny and others referred to him as "Butler"
I remember his visits to Glenmalure for shooting, picnics & playing with homemade rockets..
Also spent Butler/Power family time in Crover house.. One of our family's close friends and will be remembered fondly.
So very sorry to hear your sad news Alison and all your family. Sincere sympathy and thoughts to ye all at this devastating time. Gillian
For some of us still involved in the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Fórsa branch, Al was our first introduction to the world of union training in IMPACT. The enthusiasm with which Al played the role of the adversarial employer made us relieved that he was on our side. Over the years when he served as National Secretary he played a more familiar role as a strong trade unionist representing the interests of our members.
We are very sorry to hear of Al's passing and extend our condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and all those who will miss him.
