I am so sorry for your loss of the wonderful Bernard or Bernardo as I used to call him. I worked with him for many years in fota and to say he kept me sane is an understatement. Many times we went off bird watching together to prevent me from doing extra work for my colleagues who didn't have the work ethic we did. The animals knew him so well and did anything he wanted as they knew he was the provider of treats. He was one of a kind and I used to tell him when he was going to retire I would leave too. His go to saying in response to everything was ' it will be grand girl'. No matter what the crisis he would roll up a fag and he would help us with everything and anything. Will be sorely missed. ❤️

I worked in Fota Wildlife Park for 2 weeks in 4th year for work experience in 2014 and I worked with Bernard a few times while I was there and can honestly say he was one of the nicest people I worked with in my time there. So sorry for your loss Pauline , girls and all the family, Had the pleasure to call Bernie a friend and colleague for over 22 years of service he gave to fota , there was nothing he could not do plumbing, plastering , tiling just to name a few ,but working with animals was he’s calling. He’s left a lasting legacy on the many people he worked with and the many who started their careers in Fota . He was a man full of love for his family and kindness to us all . So sorry to hear the news of Bernie's passing, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to all his family, and friends, and his former work mates at Fota.
Having a conservation membership for a number of years, meant that I could visit throughout the year, and spend nearly 2 weeks in November, going into Fota every day, where I might bump into Bernie, who would always say hello, and talk to you, as if he knew you well.
He was a really genuine person, and will be sadly missed. Once again, deepest sympathy to all who knew him.

Dear family of Bernie,
About 12 years ago I moved from the Netherlands to work at Fota. Being away from my family was tough. But working with Bernie made it a lot easier. Always there to help or calm me down if I was worrying too much about something. I have only fond memories of him. He was a master at fixing things and he always made me laugh! He was one of the co-workers who was really hard to leave behind when I left!

And he loved you so much! I remember him always talking about bringing family members everywhere and he was always working to safe money for the family. Family was the main thing in his life and I hope his love for you can help you through this difficult time.
