I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Brendan’s family at this time of great sadness and loss.
My brother Stephen and I, younger by several years than Brendan and Declan, were invited by them from time to time to play football on our road, using their closed back garden gate, with pillars either side, as the goal mouth!
We hardly ever managed to get the ball off either of them, especially Brendan, but it was always great fun nonetheless.
Brendan was very quiet, very reserved, but not at all unfriendly; which, added to his football skills, made us younger boys even more in awe of him.
These informal and not infrequent football interludes were part of our collective boyhood, and I have always remembered them with great fondness.
God grant Brendan eternal rest.
