Over the years Canon Piert served in Arklow to cover the priests.
His homilies were perceptive, thought provoking and a pleasure to follow his line of logical deduction.
An interesting, delightful human being.

My godfather, Canon John Piert, was a priest of deep faith, generosity of spirit, and quiet authority. A native of Kilkenny, ordained in 1953, he served faithfully across many parishes, including Castletown in Co. Wexford ,Wicklow town in the 1990s, earlier in Loreto Foxrock, Sutton, Glencullen, Sandyford & the Dublin Fever Hospital. He also served at Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, as Professor of Music.
In our regular telephone conversations, Uncle John’s reflections revealed wide knowledge, strong Christian values, and a thoughtful interest in public life. He was deeply rooted in family & spoke often & affectionately of his siblings. He spoke with gratitude of Dr Peter Birch, who mentored him in his vocation, and with warmth of Fr Sherin, his music teacher & early influence. He also valued close family connections, including his cousin, Archbishop Tom White.
As his nephew I remained closely connected with my beloved godfather throughout his life, speaking with him regularly by telephone & maintaining a closeness that endured a lifetime, enriched by shared adventures, including a Caribbean cruise with my mother and wife, & earlier journeys with my father, such as an eventful drive to Lourdes in my younger years. I was honored that he officiated at my wedding in '94.As a member of Piert family through my mother, Elizabeth, I extend sincere condolences to relatives & to church communities he served so devotedly. Thanks for the the care of Our Lady’s Manor Nursing Home.

Very fond memories of Canon Piert during his ministry in Wicklow Town. An absolute gentleman. Many a Saturday spent in the parish office working on the newsletter and showing him how to use the desktop publishing package on the computer there.
He was a deep thinker and loved to talk about current affairs and politics. Quietly spoken, humble and with a great sense of humour. His Sunday homilies were always memorable and reflected that deep thinking.
May he rest in eternal peace.
