Deepest sympathy to Karen and family on the sad loss of your Dad. May he Rest in Peace.
Dearest Sheila and family: I was so saddened by the news of Denis' passing and I am sending you my deepest condolences. What an extraordinarily kind, generous, gentleman he was. Where do I begin to talk about such a good friend that he was and that you, Sheila, have been to me over the years? I have so many good memories of our times together - you and Denis letting Rich and me live with you while we were looking for a place to live in Ireland. Good times in France at your cottage, here at my home in the States, at the Jersey shore, and most of all, all the wonderful memories of my time at Dilkhushi. Denis had a zest for life and he had a way with words and I loved how he would tell such wonderful stories. His family meant everything to him, and Sheila, I will miss hearing him call you "Pet." He touched so many lives with his knowledge and wisdom. He certainly was a "Man for all Seasons."
Denis was to me a greatly valued academic colleague and friend going back more than 50 years. My condolences to Sheila and family.
Sincere Condolences to Shelia, and her family and friends, on the passing of Denis. May he rest in peace.
Deepest condolences Michael and to all your family on the passing of your Dad. May he rest in peace.
Dennis was a person of infinite good judgment and a capacity to see around corners given to few of us. Apart from occupying several central positions at UCC, during a period of significant change, he gave his talents unstintingly in many other directions. He was chairman of both Gorta and his local residents association; advisor to the Government on agricultural policy at a critical period of early EU membership; and an influential member of the Irish Federation of University Teachers ( again at a crucial time). Many thought he was the best President UCC didn’t have. With Sheila, he brought up a well adjusted family.
Our deepest sympathies to Shivaun, Sheila, and family on the passing of Denis. We hold such fond memories of him in our hearts, especially the laughter we shared in Amsterdam, the peaceful moments in Crosshaven, and our oyster feast in Royan. Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. May he Rest in Peace.
Deepest sympathy to Sheila and all the family on the loss of Denis. May many treasured memories comfort you at this sad time.Rest in peace Denis. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Our sincere sympathy to our dear friend Sheila and family. Denis was a cultured, sophisticated, soft-spoken and eminently fair-minded man who truly belonged in the university and contributed much to UCC during his long years of dedicated service. We are all the better for having known him. He will be remembered fondly and with gratitude.
Sincere sympathy to Shivaun, Sheila and all the Lucey family on the loss of dear Denis. I was lucky enough to enjoy his generosity, wry wit and lovely turns of phrase when he and Sheila were kind enough to let me stay several years ago. Such a warm and generous man, he and Sheila could not have made me more welcome. I used to hear about Denis a lot when I worked in Amsterdam with Shivaun. I empathised with him back then before we’d ever met. Shivaun would lament the untidiness of his office and my heart went out to him because I share the same foible.
I have just watched the service. Absolutely beautiful. Wonderful, too, to see Rhea and Akeela’s symbolic paintings.
I know Denis will be missed at Christmas but I am sure that you will still feel his presence along with the precious souls who have gone before him. I like to think about his happy reunion with Ben, and how the pair of them will be looking down on you and urging you all on. Much love

I knew Denis over many years in UCC and after retirement in Rotary. He lived a very busy and useful life, making significant contributions in several areas. He had a natural gift of eloquence and fluency of speech that I envied and he was always a gentleman. Condolences to Sheila and family and may Denis's gentle soul Rest in Peace.
Denis was always interested and interesting. My thoughts are with Sheila, Shivaun, Rhea, Akeela and all of Denis's family. May he rest in peace.
I was sorry to learn that Denis has died, and offer my condolences to Sheila and all the Lucey family.
I got to know him in the 1970s. He was senior staff, collegial and highly respected. I was in the early years of my first appointment. As founder members of the academic trade union IFUT, we made periodic trips by train to Council meetings in Dublin. In those days, the train had a restaurant car and staff who served cooked meals. Our expenses (until the Treasurer found out) allowed us to travel First Class. On the return trip, we would order a meal which was brought to our seats. My recollection is that Denis would bypass the printed menu and indulge a penchant for chopped tomatoes with wine. I have warm memories of those trips – business done, relaxation, chopped tomatoes and wine, and good fellowship as the landscape rolled by.

To the entire Lucey Family -- We are so incredibly sad to hear about the passing of your beloved husband, father and grandfather. Denis was a lovely man and I have such wonderful memories of his time at Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa, USA, while he was a graduate student and studied under my father, Donald R. Kaldor. Both Denis and his beautiful wife, Sheila, were so kind to my parents and my father so enjoyed spending time with you both in Ireland during research for their co-written book, "The Impact of Industrialization on Two Rural Communities in Western Ireland" (1969). My husband, Bob, and I feel very privileged to have visited Sheila and Shivaun in August 2025, and even though we were unable to see him at that time, we truly felt the presence of Denis during our wonderful visit. We send our love and our deepest sympathies to all of you.
